[Gpdd] MISC: Hay Feeding Strategy

That sounds like a great hay feeder! Having fed hay to cattle for many
years, I've
learned that what gets scattered on the ground and laid on (and more!) and
is wasted.
A hay feeder that contains the hay but allows access to most of it is great.
With the piggies, I use one of those plastic feeders that attach to the
outside of the cage
and you fill it from the top. It's angled so it all falls down where they
can get it. I also
use one of those square wire bird feeders designed for a block of suet, and
don't snap it
completely closed. It's on a long chain that I use to hang it on the side
of the pen or cage.
Another thing I've found useful are little chrome-covered soap holders on
suction cups.
(from the housewares dept at WalMart). They're V-shaped and open at the
ends. The suction
cups fit nicely between the bars on the cage, or they could be fastened on
with tie-wires.
I use these to hold fresh grass and clover, or whatever similar treats I
find. At first Snowy
seemed scared of these and would run up and dump out the food, push the
feeder away,
then eat. But she's gotten over her fear (apparently the chrome), at least
enough to eat
quicker without the hassle! I first used a little wire section from another
critter cage and
attached it to the side of the cage at a "V"'d angle and put their clover it
it. But it had very
square corners that could hurt an eye, and the chrome things have rounded
corners.
But I definitely know what you mean about walking into a store and seeing
things in terms
of the piggies! this must be a sickness, an obsession . . . my grown kids
are threatening to
have me commited (I tell them fine, as long as I can take my piggies!)
I love to look at the different cage designs and themes, etc., and get all
kinds of ideas. We
currently have a split-level, but it is a 'work in progress'. (Just wait
til after Christmas!)
Hugs to all,
Susi and the Okie Piggies
