I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who sent me condolences on the loss of Delilah, it is so comforting to know that, albeit sadly, I am not the only one to have gone through this with a young piggie. It has meant a lot to me to receive your kind words. Thank you.
I noticed that there have been a couple of messages re. blood in urine and speying piggies. 2 wheeks ago, I noticed that Iolanthe was bleeding from her vaginal area and I took her to the vet. He put her on course of Baytril, but this didn't help. Having read Richardson's "Diseases of the Domestic Guinea Pig", I came to the conclusion it was probably cystic endometritis, only cured by an ovaro-hysterectomy. My vet agreed with me and was prepared to do the operation. I was so worried about the surgery because Iolanthe is only 2 years old and I couldn't bear the thought of losing her (this was before Delilah passed away and having now lost Delilah, I certainly don't want to lose Iolanthe as well). I trawled the web and for every GP website that said "yes! spey your female GPs", I found another that said "don't do it!". I got in touch with the CCT, who advised me that they would never spey a female GP due to the risks involved. They advised me to ask my vet to give her a 0.2ml
injection of HCG and then to follow this up with another injection 3 to 4 weeks later. They also said that if it hadn't worked after 2 injections, to keep going. I was so much happier with the idea of monthly injections rather than an operation. Anyway, Iolanthe had her first injection last week and, although, she is still bleeding, there is a definite sign of improvement. Having gone through the loss of Delilah, I'm so glad I didn't opt for surgery, especially as the drugs seem to be working. Obviously, this may change in the future, but I trust the CCT and their advice.
Keep your fingers crossed for us!
Julia
