[Gpdd] [HEALTH] Piggy Hernias

Hi everyone, I've been a lurker for about a year, but have never posted to
the digest. I've been a piggy mom for 17 1/2 years. Right now I just have
1 little girl, Nard, who's a little over a year old. Her sister, Syd, went
over the bridge Dec 1 due to an enlarged heart and I'm waiting until after
the holidays to get Nard a new buddy.

When Nard was about 4 months old I noticed a lump on her left side. Having
had a pig with cancer before, I of course freaked out and rushed her to the
emergency vets. They told me that she had a hernia and the only thing to do
was to stuff whatever was hanging out back in. It was definitely a better
prognosis than cancer, but I was still worried so I surfed the net looking
for more info. I found no mention of hernias in guinea pigs anywhere.
(That's why I was so surprised to see your posting Jenni and had to
respond!) About 2 weeks after Nard's hernia appeared, she no longer had any
problems from it (ie, no more lumps that needed to be tucked back in). It
just disappeared. I hope the same thing happens for Beethoven!

My sympathies to anyone who's lost a piggy recently,
Courtney
