Jim,
The best Peter Gurney book to start with is "The
Proper Care of Guinea Pigs". It's a good general care
book. There's also "Piggy Potions", which is about
herbal/natural remedies for piggy ailments. I get my
books from The Winking Cavy Store.
They also have a large selection of Guinea Pig gifts:
T-Shirts, jewelry, mugs, notepaper, etc. I love that
store! Even though they are in the U.K., their
shipping prices are very reasonable and your order
will arrive fairly quickly and in good condition.

Susie and the O.P.s,
My girl Serendipity delivered a stillborn baby that
also looked perfect. Sera was really small and really
young, too young to be having a baby, but she was
pregnant and sick when I got her and I didn't know. I
think the poor little dear was in labor for a very
long time; I left for work at 4 am and she had been
acting kind of funny and spotting, and she still
hadn't delivered by the time I got home at noon (I
tried calling in sick so I could stay home with her,
but the military doesn't buy that excuse). When she
finally did deliver at around 1 pm that day, the baby
was stillborn. It looked absolutely perfect, so I
started rubbing it and blowing little puffs of air
into its nose, but I knew it was already gone; I'm
pretty sure it suffocated in the birth canal. I keep
thinking that if I had somehow managed to stay home
that day I could've helped save it, or at least helped
Sera with the birth. It was my first time actually
seeing a GP give birth, and I was pretty clueless but
I had my Peter Gurney book open, furiously scanning
the pages. She only had that one baby. Hope this
helps with at least one of your questions.
