Stacy, I have a long hair too and he has lived in cold climates before and 
I was able to bathe him. At first he also refused the hairdryer, but after 
3-4 times he got used to it. He still doesn't like it, but he tolerates it 
now. He knows that no harm comes from it. What I do is  do the initial 
drying wrapping him in a towel, then I extend the towel, place the guinea 
pig on it, arrange the towel to sort of contain him and I set the air in 
the low heat setting keeping some distance to not to inflict any burn.

About the heating system at your house, I highly recommend you add a 
Humidifier, especially if your heating system is a gas furnace, that really 
dries up the air. A good amount of humidity is around 60-70%.
