this respond is in regards to Holly. When our Sweetie had major surgery I
needed to feed her by syringe also. Because they are so little and surgery is
tough on guinea pigs it was recommended to me that even when Sweetie began to eat
again to still continue with the syringe feedings. I know that she would have
never made it without. I fed her by syringe for appr. 6 weeks. If I remember
correctly she started to eat a little bit on her own after 2 weeks but not
quite enough for her to survive. I was concerned for her teeth at the time
because I knew she would not gnaw a lot during that time. Luckily her teeth did not
grow too long. For that reason I have always provided our guinea pigs with
hard bread. They like the taste and it helps their teeth.
I know that surgery on guinea pigs is a very difficult decision and to see
them suffer afterwards is even worse. Sweetie took 5mg Torbutrol for pain every
8 hrs. or as needed. That seemed to help.
I am not sure if this is helpful to you, but my thoughts are with you.
