Guinea Pig Ailments
Guinea pigs are generally fine if you look after them; however, look out for
the following symptoms, which may indicate that your guinea pig is sick!
1.) Diarrhea
Is most often caused by eating too many greens. If severe, cut back on
greens, especially grass, and try arrowroot biscuits.
2.) Constipation
Caused by the opposite: LACK of greens. Treat with plenty of wet veggies,
or in severe cases, medicinal liquid paraffin.
3.) Bumble foot
Slight redness and foot swelling. Not contagious & treatable with
antibiotics, but . . .Potentially dangerous condition; treat A.S.A.P.
4.) Worms
Caused by grass grazing. Symptoms = white streaks in droppings. Bring to
the vet to treat
5.) Bladder Stones
Symptoms-- painful urination; also, unusual squeaking & arching back.
Causes-- lack of fluid & acid. Treat-- by giving pig plenty to drink, and
to eat: beetroot, apple, & celery
6.) Lice
Tiny white creatures crawling in fur. Treat every week with incecticidal
shampoo from pet store. If this doesn't help, take to the vet.
7.) Eye problems
Sore, runny eyes occurring especially if the pig is kept in a draft. Treat
with eye drops or prescription ointment.
8.) Dental problems
The guinea pig has 20 teeth which it can use while others grow in. Front
teeth may need to be cut sometimes, but this is a job for a professional.
9.) Lameness
Usually caused by lack of vitamin C.36.
God Bless,
Misti
