When is he (or she?) running away? Many gps including mine will scurry and hide whenever you try to pick them up. They just seem to do that by instinct. However, when mine are on my lap they seem to be fine. A less stressful way to pick them up is to put a litter pan or something and fill it with hay, and lift it when they jump in. If he runs away from you when he's on the floor, try putting some yummy parsley or veggies near you and tempt him with that. Perhaps your gpig just hasn't gotten to know you well enough to fully trust you yet. It takes some time.
