Hi Debbie,
It's me again. I really do feel your pain
and I lost a piggie in a similar way as your
Poivre. :-( Amberlea was my first g-pig and she
was healthy pretty much all of her life. Well,
one day, I came home from work and it was
Friday. And for the first time ever, Amberlea
wasn't "wheeeeeeping" to get out of her cage.
She was a little over 3 years old at the time.
She was lethargic and just laying there,
motionless. So, I was worried. And then the
next day, she had a runny nose and watery eyes
and she was obviously sick, so I took her to
the Vet. At this point, she wasn't eating or
drinking much. The Vet gave her a shot of fluids
and also sent me home with an antibiotic to be
administered orally. It was so long ago and I
can't remember the name of the antibiotic.
So, I called in sick from work a couple of days
to keep an eye on her. And I tried to give her
the antibiotics but she wouldn't take it. She
would just let it fall out of her mouth. It was
a horrible time for me, because I couldn't get
her to eat or drink anything. And I didn't want
to lose her. So, by the end of the wheeek, I was
only working half-days at work. And Amberlea was
getting worse and worse by the day. So, on Friday
(a wheeeek after the symptoms began), I went into
work for half a day and I don't know how I knew,
but I knew that Amberlea would be gone when I got
home. So, when I returned home, I found her there,
laying by her water bottle. And I just cried and
cried for hours. :-(
Looking back, I felt like I was being selfish for
letting her suffer like that for a wheeek. But, I
just wanted her to make it through. She was my first
pet, and we had such an unbreakable bond--I just
couldn't imagine Life without her. And even though
I think that if it were today, I would have probably
had her put to sleep to put her out of her misery, but
I really don't know. We all want what's Best for our
little buddies, and I know I wasn't being selfish--
I just wanted Amberlea to get well, just like you
wanted Poivre to get well. Would I have given my pig
the injections of the antibiotic? I'll be honest with
you, no, but I don't think you did anything wrong.
I literally will 'pass out' cold at the sight of a
needle (I have a needle-phobia: I can't even look at
a needle. Yeah, it sucks getting shots because I'm
such a pain and I'll whine and cry like a baby). If I
had to give injections, I probably would ask someone
to help me. But, like I said, you didn't do anything
wrong and if I had the stomach for it, I would have
given the injections too if I thought it would help
her get better. You did everything you could for your
little girl and I know she Appreciates everything
you did. She knows that you were only trying to help
her live. She knows. And she Loves you and will Always
Love you. You'll see her again one day, I promise.
Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps...
