I have been reading the digest even before we adopted "the girls". My
daughter, sister and I drove to Dallas two weeeks ago(a four hour drive- one way) and
rescued two sisters from a most amazing rescue center. Riley and Rorie are
short haired American babies. They made the four hour trip home very nicely and
have adapted to their new condo. It wasn't long before my sister and daughter
were enlarging it. Now they have a double decker home with lots of room. We
rearranged my daughter's room around the new addition. My sister got us started
by obtaining one piggy and then adopting another from an SPCA several hours
from their home. So when I was blindsided into getting babies it was a
no-brainer to find two that needed a good home and adopt them. Thanks to the digest and
several posting. Riley & Rorie have settled in and perk up when I enter the
room- of course I enter by saying "how are grandma's girls" each time and our
alpha dog thinks they are puppies and when visitors come that are new she gets
between them and the house and makes sure the girls are not hurt. We have a
covered house for the girls to ensure that nature does not have a chance to take
over with a carin terrier in the house. She is protective and comes to get
someone if they start to make sounds and we do not come fast enough to suit her.
Anyway- the girls enjoy watching Star Trek every night with my daughter and
her fiance'. Our lives have been changed and my ark is full- with one dog, one
hamster, two Betas (one of which was rescued also) and another tank of various
fish and now "Grandma's Girls". I read everyday, thanks to my sister and are
enjoying our new additions. I am glad we made the drive. The rescue center
(actually a couple's home) was amazing. They have babies in every room and have a
routine down that was fantastic. And we are even inspecting our local pet
shops here at home as well- making sure the ones we cannot bring home are at
least taken care of. So far the two PetSmarts we visit have done well. Thanks for
reading and I will keep you posted- this is an awesome source of information
and support.
