This is a message from UMass Lowell IT Security:

Please be aware there are email messages arriving on
campus claiming to be from Citibank, requesting
information about your
bank account.  The email messages appear authentic,
but in reality it's a tactic known as phishing -- an
email scam designed
to defraud customers of their credit card numbers and
other personal information that can then be used for
identity theft.
Typically, the email messages employ some kind of
scare tactic designed to entice users into visiting a
site and divulging
their critical financial and personal details.

The campus WebShields have identified these messages
as ** Possible Spam  **.    

CHARACTERISTICS:

From:  CitiBank or Citi
Subject:  Citibank BiIIling Department or Account
Investigation Warning

Content:

"Dear CitiBank Customer:

Recently there have been a large number of identity
theft attempts targeting Citibank customers.  In order
to safeguard your
account, we require that you confirm your banking
details.

This process is mandatory, and if not completed within
the nearest time your account may be subject to
temporary suspension.

To securely confirm your CitiBank account details,
please go to:"


The attached link to the website is actually designed
to capture financial and personal details.

REQUIRED ACTION:

 - If you should see the messages in your Inbox, just
delete them.
 - DO NOT click on the attached link and provide the
personal information.


The  IP address of the website has been reported to
the proper authorities.
