Hi Lauren,

Emma the cat wants to go home. But Emma can't go home
anytime soon - she's one of many displaced animals who
have been rescued from the rubble of Hurricane Charley
and are filling crowded shelters in Florida.

After Hurricane Charley slammed the Florida coast last
Friday, the storm left a trail of destruction and
displaced thousands of people. Many were able to take
their pets with them when they evacuated. Sadly, many
others had to leave their pets behind.

But help came quickly. Within hours, The Humane Society
of the United States (HSUS) sprang into action. HSUS sent
their Disaster Animal Response Teams (DART) into the
affected areas, where they quickly assessed the damage
and began coordinating a response with local and
state agencies.

By Sunday night, their first team of nearly 30 trained
volunteers had setup an emergency HSUS animal relief
center in Punta Gorda, one of the hardest hit areas. The
facility has been taking in rescued, displaced, and
injured animals ever since -caring for them until they
can be transferred to local animal shelters.

Your support is desperately needed today to help these
animals hurt by Hurricane Charley and future natural
disasters: http://www.care2.com/go/z/helppets

As of today, Wednesday, the situation for animals in the
Punta Gorda emergency center remains dire. Between 7:30
and 8:30 this morning alone, the HSUS facility took in
15 new animals. Even as you read this, fresh HSUS DART
teams are stepping up operations in nearby counties.

The recovery period from this storm will be long and
difficult. The Humane Society of the United States will be
on the scene as long as they are needed. And you can help,
too. Please support HSUS's emergency response by making a
special donation today. Your gift will help meet the needs
of animals by supporting the work of HSUS' disaster
response teams--for Hurricane Charley and for future
natural disasters.

P.S. I have two cats, Leroy and Flobie, and when I saw the
picture of Emma the cat in her cage in a crowded shelter,
I almost cried. If anything were to happen to me in a
disaster, it helps so much to know that The Humane Society
of the United Stateswill be there to help my precious pets.
Please consider supporting their critical work today:
