Hi Jenni

Thistle is a spiney weed that grows in fields. It
usually has a bright purple bloom on the top. Some
kinds can bloom in white and yellow. If you want to
see a picture, do a search on thistle.
The puffy things in your hay is the hay seed. It is
safe for them to eat. 
My pig Jasmine loves those seeds. I pick them out and
give her a bunch at a time.
