[Gpdd] Announcment: Callie, Katie, and all other sick piggies

Alexandra Delyani a.delyani at sbcglobal.net
Fri Dec 31 12:48:45 EST 2004

I am so very saddened by the news of the loss of beloved piggies this holiday. Be strong and know that people care and hope your days are merry, even though you will be missing you guinea pig. To have to nurture and care for another pig after a hard loss must be very hard, but you never know, that guinea pig may have a heart of gold. If you can move aside a little of the grief, I think she would lighten up your day.
As for Callie, I was heart broken to hear of such a hard last day. We keep you in our hearts.
Tiffany and I also wanted to say happy birthday to sabrina, four, she is still awsome with all those health issues that she handles. May she have Many rich years to come.
We keep all sick and hurt piggies in our thoughts and prayers threw out the day.

Have a great day
Tiffany and her dedicated slave Alexandra

Hello Secret Santa (You know who you are!!) --
Cookie here (wheeks!). Santa, you really went over the top. We had such a nice Christmas. Mom dragged the tree and the presents outside, it was so nice out, and me and Brownie got to play outside on the patio almost ALL DAY! Well, we were so excited about the presents! I got the great piggie hidey box (me and Brownie can both fit in it but mostly we take turns), and Brownie got the beautiful stocking with the organic apple sticks. And we loved the pigture of you and Mocha and Cocoa! (Mom's been hitting the cocoa pretty heavily this holiday season. She says it's hard to go back to plain coffee, whatever that is.) Oh, we are such lucky piggies. We love you Santa, and we'll keep being good piggies this year. Our new year's resolution is to spread peace and love however we can.
We hope you and your family and elves have a nice vacation and thank you for making our piggie Christmas so special. We love you!
Oh, oh, here comes mom -- gotta go.
Prrrrrrs and Love,
Cookie

Leah,

Just wanted to say "Yippe!!! for having a great Vet check. It always makes me feel so good to when my little girl is healthy. And are they not the funniest things around the "vet people"? Even when Pig girl is sick she has to work on getting her ooh's and awes out of the staff!

CJ,

We wanted to send our sympathy on your loss of Katie. How sad. And then they got you a "new pig" - people who aren't "in to" pets don't realize that you can't just replace them like a broken lamp. I lost my Kirby dog 3 years ago and still haven't had the heart to "replace" him. He was a one of a kind. We'll keep you in our thoughts -

last night one of my foster pigs, Callie, died. I'm
wondering if it was probably a tumor or stroke, or if
it could have been something contagious. (she was
housed with a neutered male (Rod) for many years.
Fortunately he seems to be eating and drinking as
normal) If you are squeamish or very sensative I
recommend you skip the remainder of this email.

Here's what I observed:
7:00AM Callie was insistant as usual about getting her
breakfast
7:00PM Callie was lying comfortably next to the food
bowl
9:00PM Callie was still lying there. That was unusual
for her, so I picked her up. Her temperature seemed
low, she could not seem to move her back end very
well, and she had some urine between her legs. it was
sticky, so I assumed she was dehydrated and gave her
some water/vitamin mixture via eyedropper. I also was
able to force-feed some cilantro and a pellet. During
this time I noticed that she had a milky shite
substance that would occasionally discharge from her
eyes. it would also come out of her nose. She
wouldn't caugh or sneeze so much as bunch up and there
it'd be. There was no coughing or sneezing prior to
this incident. (they're right next to my computer, so
I would deffinately know) Callie would occasionally
chatter her teeth (but not open her mouth) seemingly
uncontrollably and stand up on her front feet. About
20 minutes after I gave her the water her urine was no
longer sticky.
9:30PM I take Callie, all bundled in towls, to bed
with me, hoping to keep her warm that way.
10:00PM Callie still had those odd spells. She was
warm though. She started biting the towels as part of
her odd spells instead of chattering her teeth. Her
whole mouth would be full of towel. Then, she tried
to bite me whenever I moved.I got up to find something
to put her in other than my bed. She got up too (on
all 4 legs, including the "paralyzed" hind ones) and
walked off the bed onto the floor. I got on the bed.
She seemed disoriented at times, and at times she
seemed to know exactly what she was doing, but she was
agressive tward me. She seemed at times to prefer the
middle of the floor where there wasn't anything around
her and she'd snap at nothing. My boyfriend came over
and we trapped her in a laundry basket. I put some
towels in there for her. Once in the basket she
seemed somewhat less agressive and just lay there,
occasionally standing up on her front feet only and
chattering her teeth. at 6:00 this morning when I
checked on her, she was dead.

Has anyone seen something similar? I know it wasn't
rabies because she's been with me in my apartment for
the past 4 or 5 months. I never let her or any of the
pigs outside in that time. I'm concerned that it
could be contagious. Does anyone know what this could
be?

-Liz

One of my foster pigs (Rod) is a neutered male. He
always seems to have a poo part way out of his rear
end. I had read about this problem in an earlier
digest, but had deleted it before I got him. As I
recall, it was fairly common in older males and was
called compaction or something like that. Could
someone supply me with that info again? Thanks!

Hey Everybody,

I want to announce that at 9:15 am PT today 12/30/04, 3 brand new piggies entered this world. I believe they are all girls (yipes for Mr. Cuddles!! :-) ) and they are the cutest things. We are keeping the circle of life going here at the Medal household. I am sorry to hear about Katie passing and I would totally understand why you don't want to bond with another pig right away. And as for Sabrina, YOU GO GIRL!!! May you go on for another five years, you are a fighter and you keep on going despite all your health problems, one word comes to mind, AMAZING!!! So here is to the circle of life, may it keep going and going.

Sincerely,

Rob, Co-slave to Mr. Cuddles, Mama Piggie, and 3 NEW BABIES!!!

P.S. I have pictures of the happy mother and babies together if anybody wants some.

CJ, we are very sorry to hear about Katie's sudden passing. Sometimes
piggies will seem to be doing better and then quickly leave us. We know
this was a shock for you, and we send our condolences.

It sounds like your neighbor was trying to comfort you by getting you a new
piggie. Although it might feel that you don't want to bond with this new
little one, please give her a home. Long ago I lost my Rippley and thought
I'd never really get to know my newer piggie, Calliope. Some people on the
Digest will remember Calliope and know that she grew into an incredibly
special piggie.

Please do let us know what you decide about the new piggie.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all sick piggies and their humans.

Sadly,
Cindy, Joey G., Sunshine, and Tumbleweed

Hi,
I am just letting every one know that Tiffany and I enjoy reading about everything, and can not wait to make new friends. That secret santa was such a good idea, I hope everyone will be happy next year, I know I am hoping to participate in it.
Tiffany seems very healthy, but I do not think she is eating any food, just hay and treats. Should I give her the food alone and then hay and treats later in the day?
Also she is very skidesh around loud noises and we have had her for over a week, will she calm down, because my sister wants to hold her, and she can barely pick her up.

Happy holidays,
Tiffany and her concerned slave

Hello everyone. I'm sorry to have to announce the sudden loss of Katie. She
was the black Abyssinian I was worried about the week before Christmas. My
husband and I left for vacation early on Wednesday, Dec. 22nd. Later that
night (about 6:30 or 7:00), we received a phone call from my neighbor who told me
that Katie was dead. She seemed fine when we left--eating, pooping, etc. I
did have some trepidation about leaving her but I couldn't bring her with us. I
should have brought Katie and Ginger to the vet before Christmas but I
thought Katie was doing all right and because of Christmas coming, I didn't want to
take the time. I feel horrible and I miss Katie so much, she definitely stole
my heart. My neighbor felt so bad about it, she got me another one -- white,
short-hair, with red eyes. I told her not to but she did anyway and now I
don't know how to tell her I don't want her. I just don't want to bond with
her. What should I do? Thanks, CJ
