[GPDD] [health] re: diarrhea and itching

I did want to make a correction to a previous post. Wet Tail drops from the
pet store are not an appropriate solution for diarrhea in guinea pigs.
These drops are neomycin, which can be toxic to guinea pigs. Many commonly
used veterinary antibiotics are toxic and/or deadly to guinea pigs. Also,
antibiotics can make diarrhea worse, especially if not accompanied by a
pro-biotic supplement. This is because it kills off more of the good
bacteria that piggies need for proper digestion. If your piggie is sick in
any way, the best, most appropriate thing to do is to take them to a
veterinarian experienced in treating guinea pigs. Even waiting for posts to
go through to GPDD may be too long. When in doubt, call the vet! Guinea
pigs often do not show symptoms of illness until they are very sick. They
are very good at hiding symptoms. If your guinea pig experiences any
concerning changes in eating habits, bathroom habits, energy level, or an
obvious weight change, contact a veterinarian right away. Many times, the
cause of piggie illnesses are not readily diagnosable, except by
experienced veterinarians.
