Hi all,

Thought that with all of the guinea pig pregnancy questions I've seen floating around the list I'd relate an interesting story.

I have a boar named Silent Bob and a sow named Muse. One day as I was picking up supplies I noticed a guinea pig up for adoption. Well, the brutish mother and son team who were eying her definitely were not the right family for a sow who had just lost a life long companion and she had to come to a comfortable home with Bob and Muse.

Well, when she came home with me she got Muse's cage and Muse moved in with Bob. Bob was very excited of course. However, it always appeared as if the more nimble Muse was able to avoid the advances of Bob. Of course, two months later Muse gave birth to two beautiful babies who are now in wonderful homes. Muse was given her own space shortly before the birth...

Wrapping up, Two months later Muse gave birth for a second time... To six babies!!! Now the really interesting part of the story is that there was no possilbe interaction between her and Bob nor were either of her offspring capable of impregnating her. I have an immaculate conception guinea pig!

I'm not sure if everyone is aware, guinea pigs can store fertilized eggs long enough to give birth and then immediately they can grow the fertilized eggs. Neat huh!!!

(Incidentally; after two terms back to back and a very large offspring in the second batch Muse has been permanently retired from any possible breeding... Not through an operation though, she's got a huge 2 foot by 4 foot cage all to herself.)
