Hi Piggie People,
Something really alarming recently came to my attention and I wanted to share it. Did you know shelters all around the country sell the unwanted/homeless animals they have not adopted to research facilities, corporations who test human products, and educational facilities who operate on or dissect them? This is called pound seizure. Many states have laws regarding this practice... although these laws only apply to state-run/funded shelters. Here is a list of various states and their laws:

States that have laws explicitly allowing pound seizure:

AZ

CA

CO

IA

MI

OH

TN

VA

WI

States that have laws BANNING pound seizure:

CT

DE

HI

ME

MD

MA* first state to prohibit pound seizure in 1983 :)

NH

NJ

NY

PA

RI

VT

WV

looks like the east coast knows where it's at ;)

States that have laws REQUIRING that state-funding shelters sell animals to research/testing/educational facilities:

MN (after only a 5-day period, unless owner who surrendered the animal requested that the animal not be sold)

OK (unless municipality prohibits it)

SD

UT (unless owner relinquishing the animal specifies that it not be sold)

States that have no state laws addressing pound seizure:

IL

States where various towns/cities, local authorities, municipalities or individual shelters, etc. may make their own laws regarding selling of animals to research or corporations or testing etc (pound seizure):

the rest

Where does your state stand? Do you support this?

Sad & angry wheeks,

Lauren, Piglet and Pooh
