Hi Melissa!

What is probably happening when Lemiwinks' ear turns red is vasodilation of the blood vessels...they are opening up and allowing blood to flow into the ear. It's the same thing that happens when a human's ear turns red due environmental factors (cold) or emotional factors (think blushing).  It happens all the time, but because your little guy's ear is hairless it is more apparent.  Any number of things could be causing it inlcuding excitment that you are bringing him his favorite treat to stressing out because you are clipping his toenails.
