Hi Diane

Lettuce is ok to feed your piggies but only in small amounts. It contains laudanum which shouldn't be consumed by piggies in large quantities. Have a look at the ingredients of some of the products that you can purchase that help you to sleep. A lot of the natural ones contain lettuce. This is because it contains laudanum which acts as a sedative and thus helps top induce sleep. Maybe your vet was confused and this is what he meant when he said that GP's were allergic to it.

Even if you are going to feed lettuce in small quantities, I'd avoid iceberg as it contains even less nutritional value than other lettuces. Try kale, spring greens and broccoli which all contain excellent amounts of Vitamin C.

As well as leafy green veg you need to feed a root vegetable such as carrot every day. Also some daily fruit is good too.

Best wishes

Gillian
