I would just like to remind all readers in the UK that bonfire night is almost here and that everyone should be careful where pets and wildlife is concerned. November 5 is on Friday but there may be fireworks both before and after this day. If this area is anything to go by, I've already heard the odd few. Dogs and cats should be kept in during this period as they can become very frightened by fireworks. If any small pets are kept outside in hutches (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) ensure that any fireworks are set off well away from them. These small animals can become very frightened and can even die from shock due to loud bangs. Also, before lighting bonfires, ensure that no wildlife has made a home in it. Hedgehogs in particular like to sleep in bonfire piles and have no chance of escape if the fire is lit. Small rodents may also use the pile as a nest and, though they may be quicker than a sleeping hedgehog, they might also not be fast enough to escape. I must admi!
t I'm not a big fan of bonfire night and whenever I hear fireworks I think about the animals. However, there is no reason that bonfire night cannot be a lot of fun for lots of people as long as precautions are taken before bonfires are lit and fireworks are set off. Let's make this a safe and fun year.
