Hi pigs!
My mom is so mean! she won't let me give the guinea pigs floor time and
it takes two seconds to clean up! The guinea pigs don't even pee on the
carpet. She says if i put them on the floor again she will send them
to a shelter! That's the stupidest thing to do because there are way
to many homeless piggies.
Anyway, I sometimes give my girls rose petals, is this an ok treat?

Does anyone know of any pignic's in the So. California area (Orange County preferably). I would
love to be able to attend a pignic with my 9 snuggly piggies, but don't know anyone in the area that
has piggies, or any local organizations.

LOL!!!!!!! I laughed when I read about the piggy named Weeble. I have two
girls that were also born with a congenital head tilt. Their names are
Penny & Patches - but we've always called them the Weebles! They are 2 1/2
years old now - and happy and as feisty as they can be. They sure can zip
around the floors - and even slippery wood ones are not going to stop them.
They are nervouse being picked up - but once they feel secure they are
happy little cooers.

Brenda, I was so sorry to read that your Squirmy passed away. I hope it
helps in a small way to know that many of us on the Digest are thinking of you in

Hello Ana-Luisa
One of my pigs has a blatterinfection and there was yellow discharge to at
first when it broke out. Did the vet not test her urine?
Blatterinfections are important to treate as quickly as possible or else it
can get cronic... cyctis I think it is called when it is cronic? My pig gets
craneberryjuice to keep it down but the bacteria is resistent to antibiotics
so we cant cure it compleetly...

For what it's worth, here's what my two girls get in their salad each
evening:
1. cilantro or parsley
2. a small slice of orange
3. a bit of pear, melon, or a grape
4. a few pieces of red bell pepper
5. one baby carrot every other day or so
6. an occasional slice of cucumber
7. a handful of "bag" salad - like the Spring Mix salads in a bag
8. Some kale, romaine, red leaf lettuce, or red chard

Although the bagged salads are kind of pricey (I try to find them on
sale), I like the fact that they provide a very nice combination of
greens and that they are super easy to feed - just reach in the bag and
pull it out! I avoid the mixes that have cabbage or plain iceberg
lettuce.

I have recently cut back on carrots due to the concerns that have been
raised in this forum.

My pigs also get a small handful of "pet grass" each morning. I don't
know the actual name for it - it's sold at Home Depot as simply Pet
Grass. It is supposedly good for all animals, and I know my girls love
it. It grows very long, and I kind of wrap it up into a ball and put it
into one of those wire hanging veggie baskets. They go nuts trying to
get it out of there as fast as possible!

Julia,
I'm sorry your mom won't let you give your pigs floor time. What if you used an old table cloth, shower curtain, blanket or something similar so they definitely won't make a mess on the floor? What about the kitchen floor if it is linoleum or tiled? Tell her you will clean it up if they go potty with 409 or whatever you use.
As for the rose petals, I didn't find anything that said they are poisonous to guinea pigs.
Good luck with your mother and I hope she lets you give them floor time.

Lisa

I have a question. My pigs love cucumber, but I'm
afraid I may be over doing it. They all split one
cucumber each a day. Is this bad?

Dear Carla:
It sounds to me like you are doing a wonderful job finding fruits and
veggies to feed your herd. I too feed my boys whatever is seasonal. Some things
they seem to like better than others. Keep on trying new things. My boys are
crazy about cilantro! Thank Heaven that it is cheap! My boy Rocket eats
only cilantro, cucumber, and cantaloupe. I keep trying other things though. I
guess like we humans, our furry friends have likes and dislikes as well. I
wouldn't be too concerned, especially since you are feeding cavy cuisine.
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely, Karen; slave to Rex, Rajah, and Rocket

I make no claims to expertise here, but I will tell you that my 2 girls
get just 1 slice (about 1/2 inch thick) when I give it to them. My
logic is that unlike other foods that are more beneficial to them (ie:
higher in vitamin C), cucumbers seem pretty empty of nutritional value.
So they get a bit just for the sake of variety, and then I try to
provide other more "valuable" foods. On the other hand, I haven't read
or heard that there is anything about cucumbers that could cause
concern, unless maybe the water content is high & could possibly cause
diarrhea?

I'm always questioning myself about what to feed them & how much. (Same
for my rabbits, Marley & Martin) I just try to balance what I've read
with some common sense, I guess!

On another topic, how do your pigs get along with your rabbit?

Chris
