Gallant, of Goofus and Gallant, died unexpectedly today between 9:00 a.m. and
6:00 p.m. under her house and presumably in her sleep. Born in the early
summer of 2000, this tri-color Dolly Mix left sooner than expected. Throughout
most of her life Gallant used masculine pronouns and was referred to as "he."
In the first year of life, she survived an accidental fall. The only reminder
of her four weeks with a cast was a slightly less flexible right rear foot.
Last year in December, she had a hysterectomy for uterine cancer at the able
hands of the Angell Memorial Clinic in Boston. Two weeks ago, she suffered
from some slight diarrhea, but this was cured with a reduction in vegetables
and treats. Gallant had dropped a treat this morning at 8:30 a.m., but ate
happily when the treat was offered a second time.

Gallant was a happy and robust pig. She was skilled at finding her way back to
her cage and could dingle a bell when she wanted food or attention. She tended
her less extroverted cagemate, and always shared romaine leaves. Gallant was
also Goofus' voice, wheeking loudly for treats or dingling her bell for Goofus.
Gallant was an accomplished traveller, having lived in six apartments in four
years. She remembered fondly extended stays in the south side of Chicago and
the rural area of Indiana. She did not enjoy car rides, but never complained
and was happy to meet new people. Gallant resided chiefly in Providence, Rhode
Island. Her favorite place on earth was under a large bush on the Pembroke
campus, to the east of the Pembroke seal. Her favorite seasons were spring and
fall, when she ate heartily on blueberries and corn husks. Gallant was also a
fan of pignics, and loved running in a large herd. She made friends -- both
human and piggie -- easily. She is survived by two caretakers and her faithful
lifemate, Goofus.
