Thank you to everyone who expressed concern about Lucy and her bloat problem. I hardly got any sleep Thursday night worrying about her.
Everything tuned out fine. I talked with the vet yesterday and he told me that she was very lucky and that many times, slaves (well, he didn't use that term:) will come home to a very un-alive piggy who has suffered from bloat. It doesn't take very long to take hold (in Lucy's case, a matter of an afternoon) and is fatal in many cases. The vet said there can be a few things that cause it; with Lucy, it was probably because she eats ALL THE TIME. She even sleeps next to the pellet dish. She just doesn't know when to stop. I guess we didn't realize how much she was eating, as she shares a cage with four others. Now we keep timothy hay around all day and feed them higher amounts of fresh veggies. We do give the other pigs some pellets but we take Lucy out of the cage so she doesn't gorge herself on pellets. Vet said that her bloat was most likely a carb overload from the pellets causing too many gasses in her stomach. So Lucy will not be getting many pellets or fruits anymore,
just veggies and hay. We are very lucky our vet was around when we needed him. If we had waited till the next morning, she very likely would not be alive. Thanks for everyone's support!
