[Gpdd] CARE: Hay question

Carla Martinez cmartinez36 at houston.rr.com
Fri Apr 8 21:44:07 EDT 2005

Snickers and Snowball started eating Sweet Meadow Farm hay when they
received a lovely gift from Snickers' secret santa Guiness. Before that
they only ate Timothy hay. Now they have not been getting nearly as much
timothy hay because I bought a whopping 14-pound bag of meadow hay.
Since their Oxbow pellets are timothy-based, and they eat plenty, do you
think the meadow hay is enough? I think it is, but if you think
differently I would like to know. Thanks.

I also had the same experience that the Oxbow hay is not much of an
improvement over Kaytee timothy. At least a couple of Oxbow bags I
bought were not that tasty for the piglets, mostly hard and dry.

I switched to Oxbow pellets after Pablo's piggies came for a mini-pignic
and I could feel how much softer their coats were than S & S's Kay-tee
coats. He said they ate Oxbow. Now Snickers and Snowball are silky soft
too.

WGD, (Wheeking good day!)
Carla, Snickers and Snowball

such an Awesome variety of piggies,
I must say. They are all just
ADORABLE!!! Also, I was touched
by your story of how Cocoa took
Callie in that first night...
guinea pigs can be the most gentle
creatures. Here's a BIG WELCOME
to Callie!!!

I Loved the pigtures with Pepper,
Merry, etc. with the flowers in
their fur...just Beautiful.
Also, I wanted to say that I was
Sorry to hear about the passing of
your Dear Golden and Wimpy. There
never seems to be enough time with
our babies. I hope that you and
family are doing Okay.
---

Sherri,
I can't stop Laughing!! You have
some funny pet pigtures on your
website...my goodness. I Loved
looking at all of your animals,
they are all just BEAUTIFUL. Okay,
the pigture of Elmo Kitty with his
tongue sticking out drinking the water
dripping from the faucet was Hilarious!
And Wow, all of your piggies have
GORGEOUS locks. Cottonball Does look
like a Princess. Mamma Frazzle has Nice
coloring and Teddy Bear, well, let's
just say that if I didn't keep my
hair Relaxed/Permed that it would
look just like T-Bear's--ha ha!!

Lydia,

After checking the ingrediants on Buddy Wash - I would be very careful
using it. It's a dog shampoo - not even recommended for cats/kittens.

I made the mistake of using a Natural Flea shampoo on Dusty once - it
was
recommended for kittens, and the pet store recommended it. It turned
out
that she was part Albino - even though she was beige/gold. Her fur fell
out in several places and she developed huge lesions. Poor baby was sore
-
and on meds for two weeks. Very sad lesson learned - don't ask the pet
store employees.

What is very safe for pigs is Bunny Bath, and Selson Blue shampoo with
aloe. I've used Selsun Blue for forever now, and the piggys smell so
good
and are so fluffy! Dr Quesenberry from the AMC in NY recommends these -
and
she is the top Exotic Vet in the US. She's wonderful with pigs!

I'm not sure why you said Bunnys shouldn't get a bath? They can also be
bathed when dirty, and some love water. My Maltie had his own swimming
pool, and he loved to swim when it was hot. My bunny Twinkle gets a
bath
when she gets dirty.

Thanks for everyone's help on this subject. I brought Pebbles to the

Larisa,
Chai is not constipated. Some
piggies just like to have poops
hanging out of their bums. My
Butterscotch is the same way.
I've gotten so bold that sometimes
when I pick BS up, I will just
pull the poop out of his bum like
it's no big deal. And he just
looks at me like, "What are you
Doing down there, Mommy???????"
Now, as long as Chai is pooping
regularly, you shouldn't worry
too much.

Hi all!

I have noticed in the last few days that my little Precious is not
eating her pellets. Her hand veggies disappear lickety split, but the
pellets remain practically untouched. Should I worry?

I know Precious is mourning the loss of Bosco. She wheeked so long and
so loudly that she lost her voice for a time. Could this be a mourning
behavior on her part (the non pellet diet)? Are there veggies that I can
substitue to make sure she is being well nourished? She won't let me
handle her either, which is also a new behavior. She appears a bit
thinner for the wear, so when should I worry?

I guess I just wanted to "piggyback" (sorry, bad pun...) on something
Jennifer/ Sweetie Pie/Pumkin Pie posted. I think it is important to
remember, as Jennifer stated, " this digest needs to be a place for all
types of families," with the commonality being our furry little
(spoiled) friends. I am not sure that the "having kids or not having
kids" issue is inappropriate for this digest in that it is an experience
which may resonate with many on the list. As a lesbian, the whole kids
discussion effects me in a different way. I simply think we all need to
be respectful of one another so that this list is "a place for all
types" who happen to love cute furry little beasts...

Dear Lydia and everyone
we also use Pearlyte, which smells great, like baby powder, because we
have two all white abbys. it keeps their fur white, including the "lets

Wanted to share a little story with all of you of Fuzzy's first day out
in
the grass....

so - there we were... Fuzzy in his little enclosed area (with some green
plastic fence type stuff) he's munching away (on the grass, not the
fence
:)... so I quick run in the house to get a carrot or two.... i am gone
for
no longer than maybe 5 seconds and come back - empty enclosure!... i
then
see this orange and white fuzzball run along the fence... my heart goes
into my throat!!!!!!!!! luckily, the yard is fenced and also has screen
on
the bottom (near the shed) so bunnies do not take house under it... so
he
was quickly cornered and lifted up to go back in his little area....
BAD
BOY! he plays sooooo innocent - then - right when he knowsssss he
can! he
bolts! hehe.... had a good laugh after the fact...

ok done now... hope all the other piggies who finally get to enjoy the
spring time have fun!!! and to those who live in beautiful weather all
the
time :P :) just kidding :)

I am so jealous of all the Spring Talk going on. I live in Southern
Louisiana and it never snows here. Cold for us is like in the 30's which
only happens a few times during out Winter season. It goes from one
extrememe to another over here. One day it's in the 50's and the very
next day it's in the 80's! We can't even think about having a pignic
over here because of our weather. grrrrrr. And don't even talk about
the humidity...that is what is the worst part. Ok I"ll be quiet now.
Just wanted to say to everyone getting that nice spring weather ENJOY
it! :)

I was at work today when I received a my voice mail from my sister
saying "Call me. Guinness thinks he is Bing." Everyone in our house
loves Bing's videos (except the dog, who refuses to watch "rodents" -
frankly I think he is a bit jealous). Apparently Guinness had made the
rounds at the kindergarten and first-grade classes my niece and nephew
attend respectively, and was a huge hit. My sister held Guinness while
the students petted and admired him. Instead of being entitled and
somewhat haughty (his usual behavior), he was jovial and welcoming, both
wheeking and purring!! In short, he ate up the attention and handled it
like a pro. Upon arriving home, he assumed his typical "of course I'm a
Prince" stance, muttering something about his new fan club, the need for
a web page, and staring in videos. I can tell he is going to be
unbearable, excuse me, I mean unpigable, from now on...

especially for Carla and her extremely attractive Bud............... :-)
but to all,

Regarding thinking YOUR piggie is the cutest, etc, one of the things I
remember most about the pignic was the fact that so many people could
say so many times about so many pigs, "Oh, your piggie is soooooooooo
cute!" without the slightest bit of irony or consciousness that you had
just said it about a million times in the last hour, or feeling like you
really ought to come up with another word besides "cute." I for one
never got tired of saying it about other people's piggies (or looking at
or holding them) and I never got tired of hearing other people say it
about mine, or looking at or holding them. In fact, I felt oddly
pleased, as if I had made some personal accomplishment for having a cute
guinea pig, when that is about the easiest thing in the world to do.

I mean, duh! if you have a guinea pig, it must be cute, right?

I just hope the word "cute" doesn't get worn out from overuse..........
:-D

Hello

I thought my Sabrina was developing a cataract. She is
an Abyssinian and they are prone to cataracts.
When I took a closer look, the eye was red in one
corner. I couldn't find anything in the eye though. My
husband kept saying it was a cataract and it did look
just like one. The red in the corner kept bothering me
though. I figured she had injured it.
I got her out later to look at her eye again. It
looked swollen so I pulled up her eyelid. There was a
small piece of hard hay stuck in her eye under her
eyelid. I pulled easy on it, but it was stuck into her
eye. I had to pull harder to get it out. She whinned a
little when it came out.
I could have kicked my butt for not looking under
there before. I have allergy eye drops so I put a drop
in. It seemed to help her eye pain. She had been
squinting her eye before the drops.
Her eye looks better today. The swelling is down and
the red in the corner is gone. Her eye is still a
little gray over the middle, but at least she is
better.
She was already on antibiotics for a UTI, so it is not
getting infected.
