Jaime -
When Mollie was on Baytril the first time (via non-exotics vet) she became
distended and gassy. I had no idea what was going on. Probiotics were
never mentioned and I didn't know about the need for them. When our exotics
vet put Mollie on Baytril (second time), she included probiotics from the
very beginning. She said to give the probiotics about 2-3 hours after the
antibiotic - definitely no shorter than 2 hours afterward (so they would not
work at cross purposes). When I picked up the Cipro suspension a couple of
days ago from the Veterinary Pharmacist, he said the same thing - probiotics
treatment along with the antibiotic.
I have been using a tube of equine probiotics that I got from our local feed
store. The brand name of the one I use is "ProBios". I give just a
'smidgen' (about 1/4 inch) 2-1/2 hours after each dose of antibiotics. They
also had a powdered form that listed it for horses, livestock, pigs, birds,
and small pets. I wasn't as sure of myself on the dosage and administration
for that one (even though it specifically mentioned small pets), so I
compared the ingredients of it and the tube one and they were exactly the
same except for the vegetable oil binders in the tube one. I read that any
probiotic is fine as long as it is for herbivores, and the equine one was
specifically mentioned for GP's. The vet said that either the powder or the
tube is fine.
I have heard that you can use 1/2 to 1 poo (laughing aloud for some strange
reason) from a healthy GP and mash it up in food pellets for the ailing GP.
And, I have also heard of using acidophilus as well, but I don't know
anything about dosage and route. I remember seeing someone in GPDD comment
on that exact thing a while back - maybe they will repeat it for us.
I hope that Bud is feeling lots better by now and happily toodling around in
his CareFresh.

there. He gave him Baytril to ward off any infection from being cut up
in there. Here's my worry now: Should I have him on probiotics while
he's on the antibiotic? If so what should I use, how much, and where do
I get it? I take Acidophilus for my stomach and if I cut open the
capsule there is this jelly like stuff in there. Should I give him some
of that? If so how much and stuff? Sorry this is so long, I'm just an
obsessive piggie mom. If anyone can help please e-mail me either
personally on on the digest. Thanks!
-Jaime & a grateful Albert =)
P.S.- Albert is now happily playing in CAREFRESH bedding that cannot get
stuck anywhere!
