[Gpdd] [Health] Coryne bacteria (JoAnn Thompson & Rugi)

The chloramphenicol arrived on Saturday for Rugi and I'm concerned that the AB is going to be her demise. I've got a call in to my vet but also wanted to post for advice. Rugi was pretty chipper prior to putting her on the AB. She was eating and coming to me for feeding time, etc. Now, she's back in her pigloo, all fluffed up, will eat only if I force her (and then if I'm lucky). Despite the fact that I just paid $75 for the AB (including shipping), I think I have to stop. Any thoughts? The culture showed the chloramphenicol was the best but I think Rugi's body is tired of ABs.

The only other thing that I can think of is the probiotic that I'm giving her (1.5 to 2 hours after the AB and two - three times periodically throughout the day) is not long active? Should I try a new probiotic and just forget the nasty AB?

Thanks. Rugi's terribly worried "momma!" ~ JoAnn

Joann, that's a nasty one. We tried the chlor., and Bactrim, and Baytril. It kept returning. The ONLY ab that we see has eventually worked for my Willy was Zithromax (azithromycin). The problem is that for some piggies, it doesn't react well. My vet said, Willy will die without it, and may die with it. Well, we had no option, you know? With Willy, it was ok. It took forever for him to get over it.. a few months, and now he is on the Zithromax once a week for this month and we are done.

Your vet can call mine and consult. I think I already gave you my vet's info, right?

I also supplemented with Probiotic during this time. I always give it 2 hours before or after the antibiotic.

Hello! My vet just got back to me with the results from Rugi's urine culture.
She has a coryne bacteria - does anyone know what this is and how she could have
gotten it?

He wanted to give Rugi an antibiotic that is in the penicillin family and I told
him no (sorry - I forget the name because I'm not familiar with this type of
stuff -- I just know that penicillin is bad for guineas).

He said the AB most recommended by the Lab was Chloramphenicol (which according
to the guinea lynx site is a safe drug). However, he does not know if we can
get it. He said it's been pulled off the market. Any alternative suggestions if
we're unable to get? Thanks!

David - The Story Piggies and I wish to send sincere condolences your way on
the crossing of Crackers over the Rainbow Bridge. I'm sure he will be
greatly missed. These little guys are such a part of our families that they leave
us with broken hearts when they cross the bridge. Hope knowing that we
understand how you are feeling helps even a little bit.

The sad note below is from Brook Shaffer. I've never met a pig who liked a
hammock as much as Elvis.

Elvis Parsley crossed over the Rainbow Bridge early morning August 18, 2005.
He passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Elvis was the old man of the group, having come to live with myself and Miss
Pooh late November, 1999. At the time he was already a year old and had
lived most of that year in the Pinellas County SPCA. He tried his best to be
a faithful friend to Pooh, but she was happy with cage bars between them
where she could rub noses with him when SHE decided it was a good time to do
so.

Because his love was never returned and he had so much friendship to offer
another piggie, his budpig Toblerone (Toby) Boar came to live with him early
2000. He and Toby remained close until Toby's surprise passing in December
2004.

Elvis then shared a split home with Calliope and her huspig, Admiral Noah,
until Noah too passed late December 2004. Elvis and Calliope quickly found
each other and joined pig pens to be a couple for the past 8 months.

Elvis was a wonderful little soul, with the perfect, "who, ME?" look that
melted anyone's heart. He perfected the art of "hammock lounging", which was
copied by several pigs who met him via the several Pignics he attended
throughout the years. (Who could blame the other pigs for having hammock
envy? He looked GOOOOOD lounging in his pigpad!) At almost 8 years of age,
he was quite spry for an old guy and would give Calliope a run for her
romaine. His precious little wheeks will be missed by all in the Shaffer
household.

In the meantime, Lady Calliope is beside herself being alone. She's never
lived without companionship and would like to relocate and and share space
with some young boar or sow who would like to be "kept". (As we all know,
those of royalty "keep" others for their companionship and entertainment.)
If anyone has a sow or neautered boar that would like to share space with a
confident, attractive, intact 3 year old piglett, please let me know. She
will come with whatever pellets, hay, and bedding I have, as well as a nice
piggie palace if the new landlord would like.

Keep an eye on the skies - when you see your next shooting star, that's Pooh

telling me Elvis has come home to be with her, Toby, and Noah, and all the
other beautiful piggie souls with whom out paths have crossed.

Wheeks to all,
Brook :(

My vet was able to order the chloramphenicol from a lab in NJ. They are going to flavor it with tutti-frutti and while I paid a fortune to get it overnighted, it will be delivered to my home tomorrow so we can get Rugi going on her meds as soon as possible.

It sounds like the coryne bacteria is nasty stuff and hard to cure? It scares me to hear that but I will remain hopeful that Rugi can conquer this and trust me, she'll get "cadillac care" from me!

Thanks for all the good advice and please keep any and all suggestions and advice coming! I appreciate it.

Hi there,
I am in Mississippi and my vet has no problem obtaining chloramphenicol. My little Jojo just finished a course of it for pneumonia and it worked very well, no adverse effects at all, but I did give her acidophilus as a probiotic just in case of tummy upset. The bottle said chloramphenicol suspension and it appeared to be tablets which had been crushed very fine and mixed with a liquid--I had to shake it vigorously before each dose. Also it smells HORRIBLE! But I just gave Jojo an extra parsley sprig to take the taste out of her mouth and she didnt seem to mind too much!
If your vet still has problems finding it, e-mail me and I will ask my vet where she gets it.
Sending "Get well soon" wheeks to little Rugi.

I think you are referring to the Eastern States Exposition held annually in MA. It goes on for about 3 weeks.

Each state has a building. There are entertainment and rides. I haven't been in years. We used to always get the baked potato in the Maine building. It probably costs $6 now.

Hi JoAnn

My Exotics Vet uses chloramphenicol in suspension and ointments but you have to be extremely careful with it due to very rare side effects in humans!! One in a million or so, people will have a severe reaction to even touching it, possibly fatal, so I had to wear gloves when using it. It is safe and very effective for piggies

If this scares you off have him check out the efficacy of Baytril and Cipro against the bug your piggy has. Also, incase you are new to this , you will need to give your piggy probiotics 2 hrs before and after his antibiotics so he wont lose so much gut flora that he gets diarrhea which can be fatal

keep in touch with us all as you go through this and hurry to get started on your antibiotics
Sandy

Hi! The Big E is the Eastern States Expo for the state of MA. A yearly
state fair. All 4H clubs compete there, it includes livestock shows, dog
shows, horse shows, including the draft horse show, and each town or city
is represented within a building. There is also crafts competitions, food
competitions, and tractor pulls. All kinds of products are for sale, and
all kinds of food is for sale too. One can literally have breakfast,
lunch and supper at this fair. There is also a lot of entertainment. Its
held in Springfield, MA. Its at the end of September, and its the state's
biggest fair. The Eastern States Expo area is solely that, an area for
the fair that also gets used for other events like Equine Affair in
November. The fair grounds has several buildings and covers a large area.
I hope this info helps.

Hi all. Deb & Popcorn- I am sooooo glad to hear Popcorn is doing well. He sounds like a piggie with lots of character! I hope he continues to do well & get stronger.
I had to laugh at Rayna's post because people I know are always telling me if they could get reincarnated they want to come back as one of my pets!

About Rugi's infection, I will give you what little info I know about Chloramphenicol from the vet courses I took & working in a pharmacy. As my knowledge is very limited on this subject, you should definitely NOT let my opinion sway you from doing what your vet thinks is best! Chloramphenicol can also be known as Chloromycetin, Paraxin, or abbreviated as CHPC. I always heard it is used to treat dogs or cats, never knew it could be used on piggies. It is used for severe, serious infections as it is able to pass thru infected tissues and into organs where other antibiotics cannot reach. It can have negative effects on the liver and also is not supposed to be given thru intramuscular injections. As far as I know, most forms of it have been pulled off the market for humans. I don't know about for animals. Humans can develop a fatal condition called aplastic anemia from exposure to the drug. That is an unreversable suppression of the cells that form blood. Animals however, cannot get
aplastic anemia. They can get cell suppression, but it is reversible in animals unlike in humans. If the vet decides to give your piggie this med, you need to be VERY careful to wash your hands right away, so it is not absorbed thru your skin. I don't know if it can be absorbed thru contact with the piggie's urine or feces. If your piggie is on other meds the antibiotic can interfere with certain ones. Apparently it also tastes horrible too. I think the coryne bacteria is the same bacteria that causes diphtheria? I vaguely remember that from my vet courses, but don't quote me on that! I hope some of this helps, but it's been a while so if any of this info is not quite on the ball you'll have to forgive me! If any of this doesn't make sense to you, feel free to write me personally & I'll dig out my text books & try to find you an answer. Hmmm.... where did I put those anyway.......?
Bye!
