Lisa, I have had so many guinea pigs spayed/neutered/operated on, and that includes removal of mammary tumors. Never lost one to anesthesia problems. My vet's protocol is #2 on http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm site. The anesthesia portion is tried and true.
With that said, it IS possible to lose a piggy due to allergic reaction to the anesthesia. Also, hopefully you have a great piggy vet. I would print out the protocol and show it to your vet to see if that is the anesthesia yours uses. Your vet can always call mine to talk about protocol, too. Honestly, we never talk about the possibility of losing one because in the years that we have had piggies in my vet's care, we haven't had to worry.

I will send you the details of the Critter Berries / Vitamin C Scam via a
direct email. It is a little long and convoluted and I won't take up digest
space with it. Besides, I feel dang foolish at the hoops I jump through to
get that rascal Topper to eat his Vit C!! (Of course, of all the people in
the world, who would understand "jumping through hoops for piggies" better
than the Digesters???)
Topper did exactly the same thing your Albert did. He LOVED the Oxbow
Vitamin C at the beginning - would actually run up, snatch them out of my
hand, and make off with his loot at the speed of light - but then he got to
where he not only wouldn't eat them, but. . . and I kid you not. . . he
became very belligerant(sp?) about NOT eating them.
I had started trying to get him to eat the Vit C by giving it to him first
and, then, when he would FINALLY eat it, immediately giving him a Critter
Berry for a treat and reward. At one point, I was doing that and trying get
him to eat the Vit C and I kept handing it to him and he would drop it and
hop up for the Critter Berry; I would hand it to him again and he would drop
it again; etc. About the forth time we went through this, he took it out of
my hand and, instead of dropping it, he calmly - and very DELIBERATELY -
walked over to a puddle of VERY fresh urine, dropped the Vit C tablet right
into the middle of it, and then casually walked back over to me and stood up
for the Critter Berry treat!!!!! That dad-gummed juvenile delinquent!!!!
Anyway, I'll send you my latest effort. It seems to be working well. . .
so far. . .

It is really nice to write some happy news.SPIKEYS EATING AGAIN im so
pleased. Thankyou to Carla, Kay Jeri and Jamie for your help and advise it
did help a lot. It must have been a problem with his two bottom teeth. But
after he had them cut they must have been sore and awkward for him to eat
with. I fed him little leaves for a couple of days by hand. I bought some
organic veg baby food witch i was gonna feed him that eve but he was eating
himself it was great to see.
Its my birthday today and i said this was the best present i
could have, mind you the dish washer came second. Thanks again to every one
it is good advise that i can use if any of my other pigs get any probs.
Leah i was sorry to hear B Bear is not
eating i really hope she picks up like Spikey i no how your feeling. Hope to
hear some news soon.

Hi Deborah, I just got your posting through so i thought i would thank you
for your advise on Spikey. They did look at his back teeth in the vets with
a scope they seemed to be ok. He gave me some baytril in case he had an
infection in his mouth i gave it to Spikey for 3 days but when he started
eating again i thought it must have been long teeth so i stopped it. I
thought it would be better for Spikey not giving him antibiotics if he didnt
need them. I hope ive done the right thing.

So sorry to hear Brownie Bear is giving cause for concern - I do hope she is
back to normal soon. I always feel my Soulage is a little like her
personality-wise, and sometimes she gives me nasty health scares like that then
bounces back. But I worry every time that one day, like the boy who cried wolf,
she
will be really ill and I'll expect her to bounce back and she won't. I feel
so helpless in that situation with no reliable piggie-savvy vet to turn to.
Anyway, the Dolly Mixtures and I are remembering Brownie Bear in our
prayers, along with all other piggies who are not feeling well - and all their
poor
slaves, who I sometimes think suffer more than the piggies themselves in such
circumstances.

First let me thank you so much for telling us how you bought Babu Franklin,
the unwanted store piggie. I know it goes against all devoted piggie-slave
principles to purchase a piggie that has been deliberately bred for financial
gain, as it just reinforces the breeders' and sellers' greed and exacerbates
the problem long term, but none of us can change the world, whilst each of us
can change it for just one little individual piggie. I once bought a rabbit
from a petshop because it looked ill. She died within 5 days and of course
broke my heart, but at least she knew 5 days of human love.
We have lots of animals here - 2 dogs, 5 cats, only 1 rabbit now, 3 goats, 5
geese and 16 chickens, as well as the 17 guinea pigs. They all inter-relate
to a degree, mainly amicably, apart from the geese, who terrorise everyone!!
In the winter I have my female piggies loose in the porch. Their cages are
on the floor, and I do shut them in them at night, but during the day they can
roam about visiting one another, as all the cage doors are open. Piggie
slaves will be horrified, but the 2 dogs and 5 cats have unrestricted access to
this porch, and as it is the warmest room in the house when the sun shines, it
is a popular place to doze during the day. Initially they were only allowed
access under strict supervision, but we soon learned that the dogs and cats
did no harm to the piggies, and the piggies were not frightened of them. I have
to admit, the dogs love to eat the piggie poops, but they don't seem to do
them any harm. Our two white cats, Daisy the oldest at 17 and Tetu the
youngest at 3 (who grew up with guinea pigs) love to actually go into the cages
and
curl up on the straw - I do have a photo of Soulage peeping somewhat
incredulously out of her pigloo at a white cat curled comfortably into a tight
ball
on the straw just outside!
On winter evenings, the dogs lie on the settee beside us and the fire, and
when I have my piggies out on my lap they will run up and down the bigger dog,
Tzigane, sniffing her, especially her face. She just lazily opens an eye,
sees it's a piggie and goes back to sleep! I might add that we also have photos
of Tzigane using Tetu as a pillow, and lying snuggled up to our rabbit Bisou
in front of the fire. Tzigane is a big Alsatian/Collie cross, very wolf-like
in appearance, who terrifies many of our French neighbours with her ferocious
bark, but she doesn't seem to have an ounce of malice in her - she is as
terrified of the geese as everyone else!
I would never advocate leaving piggies within reach of potential predators -
I had 5 beloved piggies massacred outdoors by maurauding strange dogs in May
2003, and the pain of that day never diminishes. But in my own experience,
it seems that if one treats all ones animals as equal members of the family, as
we do, they all seem to understand that every other animal is part of their
pack or herd, and don't view them as potential prey. Geese, I should point
out, are entirely herbivorous - they don't see others as prey, just as a
potential threat, and seem to regard attack as the best form of defence. But
I'm
afraid I love them anyway - they will back down if approached firmly, and have
beautiful blue eyes ... and it was lovely watching the goslings grow up!
Can I just take this opportunity to thank everyone who expressed condolences
at Chestnut's departure to The Bridge. Only we gpdd-ers know how much
comfort can be obtained through such communications. A voluntary helper we had
staying expressed absolute amazement that I had written an obituary on the
Internet for Chestnut, and that people all over the world had expressed
condolences. I suppose on the grand scale of things it must seem a little odd,
and yet
to all of us on here, it seems the most obvious and natural course of events
after a piggie has passed on, doesn't it? I am so very glad to be part of this
very special community. Please forgive me for not sending personal
acknowlegements, but I am still sofa-bound, and typing is very tiring. Please
know
that every word of comfort helps. I know you fellow slaves are the only people
who really understand.
This is longer than intended, but I did want to chip in!

Hi all,
Murray's tumor keeps exapanding and has ulcerated which is not a good sign. He
acts so happy though. I knew he was feeling good when he started chewing on the
bars! That is one of his favorite pastimes. Not the healthiest of pastimes, but
he likes to do it and when he was really sick, he had stopped.
He has a good appetite and eats whatever I give him. He is on a daily dose of
baytril and half a baby aspirin. I sprinkle some acidophilus from a capsule on
his veggies so he gets his good bacteria since he prefers not to eat yogurt.
So here we are at a crossroads of sorts. We can take the tumor off and he could
very well recover because likely the tumor is encapsulated as most mammary
tumors are and as evidenced by this ulceration. Although he may die from
anesthesia. We can leave the tumor and he could at some point become septic and
die from that. So it seems either choice I make could end in his death.
So right now surgery is looking more appealing to me. I know we have been
through this conversation before but now the stakes have changed a bit. If he is
going to die, I would rather have him die in his sleep under anesthetic than
waste away due to septicemia. This is so hard... He is such a good boy. He is 5
years old so he is not a young whipper snapper any longer but he has a lot of
life in him, I can feel it.
The hard part is determining if I am making the decision for me or for him, you
know?

Hi all,
I noticed just two days ago while bathing one of my peruvian sows that the
less dominant of the two girls had been severely barbered by her sister pig!
Amazingly the skin is intact, but her beautiful long coat has been indeed cut
short on one side all along from her face to her mid back!
Immediately, I removed the "offending pig", to see if a few days apart would
cause the hair to begin to grow back, and indeedm inspection of the area today,
shows some tiny hairs peeking through!!! I was not sure whether it was the sow
herself doing it or my other (very dominant) sow. So, now, do I have to keep
these ladies apart forever if I dont want this to recur? It is sad to see them
looking for eachother, as they are close together but not in the same cage.
Anyone deal with barbering I would appreciate your thoughts on this,

We have new pigs!
Two young adult boars (2 years old is young adult, yes?) have joined
our household. Their names are Clover and Butterscotch, not names we
would have chosen for them but they do seem to know them so I guess
we'll keep them for now. Clover is black and roan and white and has
sort of wiry fur. His brother Butterscotch is tawny and white and his
fur is American with some extra length at the back of his head and his
rump. Butterscotch's fur was matted under the rump hairs and I'm having
to cut clumps out. He's not pleased with this but if I keep the
butchering brief he lets me get away with it. He doesn't seem to mind
being brushed, which should make it possible to avoid more mats once
these are out, I think. They both need pedicures and grease spot
cleanings but otherwise seem to be in decent health. Their pigtures are
at the bottom of my homepage for now.

They were quite scared of us when they first moved in a wheek ago.
Their last home had a 3 year old who couldn't seem to learn to leave
them alone. It took a few days for the boys to figure out we weren't
more of the same. They have now decided that I am housekeeping and room
service and that I probably don't mean them harm when I try to snuggle,
though they still aren't too enthusiastic about that. They had been
bedded on cedar and fed alfalfa hay; we switched them to aspen and
towels with no complaints and feed them Oxbow timothy hay which they
decidedly approve of. They also approve of the institution of Salad
Time. :-)

Tummy and absorption problems abound when one takes antibiotics. One of the
best things to do is to give acidopulus(spelled different ways); it's in
yogurt...the "live"...dophilus. It helps put the good bugs back into their
stomach; antibiotics kill the good bugs and cause many problems. Do not give it
exactly at the same times you give the antibiotics but, at least an hour later
or after giving the antibiotics. The antibiotics will immediately kill the good
bugs, too. if the yogurt is given at the exact time of the day as the
antibiotics are given. Pig won't like it but, pig needs it so diahhrea,
"grunting", not eating and feeling really yucky won't happen. There are some
tubes at the Pet stores which are designed to put the good bugs back in, too. I
use goat acidophilus but, any live acidophulus will do the trick, only need it
until about 1 week after the antibiotics stop; or if the pig is still not
feeling well. Put some on the top of his/her front paws and smear some into
their mouth on on the hair nearby. They will eat it as they think they are
cleaning it. Acidophilus helps humans with tummy problems and help our stomachs
to settle down, if we have used antibiotics or messed up our stomachs with
something strong. Check with your doctor or alternative health care
professional...or...go by your "gut feeling"/spiritual guide and do what is said
or you feel is right.

We would like to announce that today, August 28, is the first anniversary
of Sunshine and Tumbleweed's adoption day! They are two of the Maryland
rescue piggies and came to us through the wonderful efforts of Judi,
Virginia, and many others whose names we don't know but whose kindness,
compassion, dedication, and strength made the guinea pig railroad possible.
As I type this, Sunshine is enjoying a nap, and Tumbleweed is by his side,
eating hay. Although not literally brothers, they are devoted to one
another. Once during floortime, Tumbleweed ran to get Sunshine to tell him
that a treat was being served; Sunshine later returned the
favor. Sometimes when Sunshine naps inside the wooden house my husband
made, Tumbleweed will curl up outside the doorway. When one goes to the
vet, usually the other goes as "moral support."
They are a joy to know! We are so lucky to have them in our lives.

First, I would like to Thank
You all for the outpouring of
Prayers for my little Bear.
Wheeee really appreciate it!
Next, I wanted to update ya'll
on my B-Bear. She is doing better
and is eating her pellets. She
wasn't drinking enough water,
but last night after Daddy Slave
and I got back from dinner, I
noticed that she had drank a lot
more water and there was blood
on one of the towels, so I'm
thinking that she passed something
(maybe a small stone, or just her
usual bladder sludge). Oh, and she
still isn't eating much of her
favorite veggies, but I did give
her cucumber and she gobbled that
right.
She seems to be a little more lively
today (Sunday). She's moving around
more and stuff. Also, she started
pooping again, so that's definitely
a good sign...Whew!
I've been syringing her lots of
extra water, because I know how
important it is to keep a sludge
piggie watered. And I've been syringing
Butterscotch too, cuz he wants
whatever Brownie Bear gets. B'scotch
was turning his food over every so
often on Thursday and Friday because
B-Bear wouldn't play with him like
she usually does and she was snappy
with him because she wasn't feeling
so good. But, yesterday, BS didn't
turn the bowl over at all, so I know
that that means that BB is feeling
better.
Well, I better go run and tend to
the piggies. I'm about to do another
BB Power Hour. But, again, THANK YOU
sooooo much for your Prayers and
Concern. I know in my Hearth that it
is helping my Bear get through this
and we APPRECIATE IT!!!
