My brother has the class guinea pig for mid-winter vacation. I will be his father in the summer if his teacher is okay with us buying him. He was born October 7 2004. I was holding him and he bite me. his top and bottom teeth sank into my finger, he then, with his teeth in my finger puled. It was painful. It happened to my brother when his guinea pig, my nephew did the same thing to my brother. Is this normal?

My Lemi uses his cuddle cup as a toilet! in the morning, i will find a lot of beans in there. Its weird because sometimes he will leave the cup and go potty in a corner. I think he just gets lazy because he will spend all day in the cuddle cup under his blanket and just use it as a combination bed/toilet! oh well. i just wash it often!

Erin and Frodo,
Go to Cavy Cages at http://www.cavycages.com/ . They lay out the best dimensions for your Piggies. Keep in mind it is best to keep the new Piggie isolated for 2-3 weeks to make sure he isn't going to share any illness or mites with Frodo. Then you should start introducing to each other slowly, in neutral territory. Gradually increase the time they spend together until you feel comfortable leaving them alone together. Also you should visit Cavy Spirit at http://www.cavyspirit.com/ for information on Guinea pig social life. It provides very helpful info about first introductions, space they need to be happy, and the importance of quarantining new Piggies. I hope these sites help you out.

Kiri and Little Guy,
Have you noticed Little Guy doing more scratching in that area than usual? I would take him into your vet for a checkup. Take a good look at his skin for flaking or little dark spots that might be mites. Without lots of scratching I'm at abit of a loss, but I would definitely get a professional opinion if the spot is getting larger. Let me know how he is doing.

Does anyone have suggestions for taking a piggie to the vet in the winter? It's about 30 degrees this week in NJ.

How do you protect the piggie when taking it between the house and car and the car into the vet's office?

Thanks!

Stephanie

>From what I have read they are high in starch and
problematic. There are a few articles on the HRS
website. I didn't see anything on the Peter Gurney
website. Also, since they can cause gas that could
lead to serious problems. I would think that bean
sprouts would be different. Brussel sprouts might
cause too much gas. Animals are just like people.
Some can do everything wrong and live forever, other
are more sensitive and you have to be really careful.
I haven't heard of runner beans before.

Satchel has a whitish discharge from his eyes and
sometimes from his nose. Ive had two vets look at him
and they both said that it was not a disease and a
part of aging. The same thing you see in dogs. But
discharge is something that can be a sign of disease
so it is good to have it looked at to rule out a URI.
If your pig is sneezing then I would definitely be
concerned.
Usually I notice that our pigs sleep with their eyes
closed or partially closed. Bunnies have a third
eyelid and maybe pigs do too. I found out about this
because one time I didn't close the baby gate all the
way and Benjamin and Polly got together and fought.
She scratched his third eyelid in the fight. It's so
fun to go to the ER Vet and pay out lots of money.
And for that time and money you learn about rabbit
anatomy. Anyway, I suspect guinea pigs have a third
eyelid too that helps protect their eyes but we don't
notice it. But they will blink if something comes
near their eye like your finger or hand.
When animals are put under anethesia a special
ointment is put in their eyes to keep them from drying
out, so I suspect they don't blink the way we do. If
I remember I'll ask our vet the next time we see them,
which is inevitably always sometime before I think it
will be.

When Parsifal would get impacted he looked like he was
carrying a load in his "pants." Like a kid with a
full diaper. Peter Gurney's site has a great section
on it http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/analimpact.htm .
He describes how to remove the impaction which is easy
but SMELLY. I recommend that you do it carefully
over the toilet and if you don't feel secure holding a
squirming guinea pig over a toilet, put down a paper
towel or two layers of kleenex on the counter and
squeeze it out over that. You will want to flush it
immediately, put the pig back in a safe place
(actually you might need to put the pig back first
then flush the business) and wash your hands
thoroughly to remove the smell. My husband always
referred to it as squeezing out the cookie dough
because that is what the consistency was like. So
he'd come in the bedroom and say, "I just squeezed out
Parsifal's cookie dough." I'm just lucky that he
loves the animals as much as I do and is involved in
their care. His descriptions for their impacted
matter leaves something to be desired.
