I want to thank everyone who sent in info on checking for impaction and helping the boys if they get it. Lisa's description was especially clear and helpful. Now I have one other question. Bud is out for several hours a day as I've mentioned on a sheet. He does some butt-dragging and I'm wondering if this will help him stay cleaned up on his own as far as the goo gland. I know when he does it in his cage on shredded paper I can see where things wouldn't get 'wiped off'. When he's out on the sheet, though, it would seem like this would help. Does anyone know or have any educated guesses?
I was happy to see someone else besides me recently singing the praises of shredded paper. I also put down a layer of unshredded newspaper first but I have a little addition. Under the newspaper I put a double layer of those heavy brown paper grocery bags. Since bedding Bud on paper I've changed from plastic to paper. All the bags get used as an underlayer or they get shredded. I bought a paper cutter and I slice off the heavy sack bottoms. I use these under the unshredded newspaper and shred the upper sack parts. First paper bag bottoms, then open newspaper and finally a shredded layer.
One thing I learned through trial and error was that it works best to shred the paper in short sections. If you shred a whole sheet and want to do a spot cleanup, you end up pulling up long strings of clean paper.
Another tip if you need more paper than you get from your daily paper: My husband raids the recycling box at work. They have two daily papers for the coffee room each day and it's all just wasted. I'm sure this is true of many businesses and I'll bet they would willingly save papers for anyone to pick up.
