I've really got to agree that the GPDD can be silly
and do gift exchanges and still be concerned about
rescue and more serious issues. I recently adopted a
neglected piggy, and was feeling pretty discouraged
about humanity; how can people do horrible things to
such sweet little, trusting animals? And then we got
our Secret Santa present in the mail, and then we got
a wonderful thank-you from the piggies we sent Secret
Santa presents to. It was one of the best feelings of
Christmas spirit I got all season, just being reminded
that there were other people out there who were
willing to spend money and time to give guinea pigs
not just basic survival, but real friendship, and yes,
to spoil them a little. My friends think I'm insane
for driving five hours round trip to rescue one guinea
pig, not to mention how much money I'll no doubt spend
to give him a lifetime of food, housing, and vet care.
And compared to the rescue trains and all the other
work done by the people on the GPDD, I'm a
lightweight.
