Margaret-
It was good to hear that your allergies are not due to your piggies! While you can most likely control the dust from the hay, of course you can't withhold it from them - piggies must have a constant supply of hay such as timothy or other good grass hay at all times. You can, however, watch for a good quality hay and avoid most of the dust. This was important for us when we were feeding hay to our horses and cattle, and is important now with the piggies. We use KayTee timothy hay in the small bags (usually from Walmart); I always check for color and smell as well as how hard the hay is. The softer the hay the better, as the hardness comes from the stems that are not as nutritious, and may poke a piggie in the eye. You can also clean more often between hay feedings to keep the dust down. When I moved into my son's last fall, sharing a room with the piggies (now 6 of them!), I got one of those small HEPA air filters, and it helps, too. Even if the slave isn't bothered by
allergies, the piggies certainly can be affected by the dust, and they can't get away from it, so this is an important subject for all of us.
Maybe someone else can give them the hay and place it in a far corner, but be sure they get it.
Best of luck with your piggies-
