Instead of Aspen chips, try Aspen shavings.  I've gotten several bags of
chip and I have found that there are a lot of sharp pieces that can pierce
them.  The shavings is a lot fluffier and is not as rough against their skin
and feet.  They can also sleep on it better.  Any place that sells feed for
animals carries it.
