Hello all!
Well, Lemi finally got into see the vet for his sneezing/eye discharge.
Per his last vet visit in Sept, the vet concluded that he might have some congential problem because the right eye and nose were smaller than the left side. This time, he was diagnosed with a nuerological disease where he is basically paralyzed on the right side of his face. When she stuck an instrument by his left eye, he would wince and close his eye. When she did it to the right eye, he didn't make any movements. There also appears to be some scar tissue on the cornea. How all of this happened? I don't know. He does have a playmate but he had the eye problems before he got a brother to play with. Maybe the nerve damage was always there but maybe playing with his brother he somehow got his cornea scratched. OR, he is a resuce piggie and who really knows what happened to him the first 5 months of his life!
Anyway...he is on antibiotics. He is also on an eye ointment that has to be applied directly to the eyeball 3x/day and massaged since he lacks the ability to close his eyelid! after that, he gets artifical tears to keep his eyes moist. oh my gosh! These silly little guinea pigs really do have the craziest little lives. I am glad to see that his eye problems have not affected his personality or his vigor for life. Everyone at the vet thought he was just adorable!
Thanks to those of you who responded to my questions and pray that he is able to continue to enjoy life despite his nerve problems!
Melissa and Neurologically impaired Lemi
