Jeanna,
I think that the consensus in the forum in the past has been that GP can
have as much hay has they want. They love to eat it and to play in it.
If you are putting hay directly into the cage (i.e. it is touching the
cage floor where the "do their business")then I believe that the
consensus is you should supply them with fresh hay more often (I do this
and give them fresh hay twice a day) because the hay may become soiled.

The type of hay that should be used is timothy hay. I think alfalfa is
too high in calcium and can cause some problems with stones etc. I use
timothy hay from sweet meadow farm
(http://www.sweetmeadowfarm.com/hay.html) It was recommended by many
people in the forum and they even sell organic hay (which is what I buy)
and the GPs LOVE IT!!!!

I hope this helps answer all your questions. I know that there are
plenty o' hay experts in this forum! So good luck-

Sincerely,
Michelle
