I had the same problem with my vacuum cleaner.  It got very stuffed up.
If you have carpetting, then I would think that the best thing is to lay
down some plastic and get a hand brush and scooper and pick up the
bedding/hay that way.  You can find the brush/scooper at any Kmart or
Walmart Store.
