[Gpdd] CARE: Thank you from Snowball

Thank you everybody for your good wishes for Snowball. He seems to be
doing much better, eating fairly normally, just being his typical self
and hanging out with Snickers in their 'mansion'. It concerns me that
he's going to have to get his molars trimmed so often. Anesthesia every
ten weeks?? That sounds terrible. We are going back to the vet next week
so she can check up on him. Interestingly enough, in the waiting room of
the hospital we met a girl who knows the person who invented the piggie
chin sling. I had seen the chin sling on the guinea lynx website. I will
check into it again before following up with the vet, and ask her to
address that issue.

Very sorry about your loss of Adam, Kay. And Cindy's story of Joey G is
so touching. Bless their piggie hearts!
Carla, Snickers and Snowball

So sorry to hear that Snowball has teeth problems as well as Adam. The
molars can be a problem if they overgrow; the piggies cannot eat
properly
and will therefore lose weight and condition - sometimes the teeth can
cut into the tongue or cheek, and be painful for the piggy. Worse
still,
they can grow down into the jawbone. Once a piggy has to have their
teeth
trimmed, it will be an ongoing treatment, not a once done and that's it.
Could be needed every 10 weeks or so. Metacam can help with any
problems
that cause discomfort in the jaw, etc.

The teeth can grow very quickly (in a week) so getting early treatment
is
important. If the piggy canot eat, it is important to give help such as
Oxbow Critical Care, or Pascoe's Guinea Pig Goodness pellets dissolved
and
syringe feed this mixture. A piggy who doesn't eat can get liver
damage,
so it is important to get food in to keep everything working. Bio Lapis
can also help as it has a prebiotic (as does the GP Goodness) as well as
vitamins and minerals.

Only give a small amount by syringe at a time (say 0.5 ml) so piggy can
cope with a mouthful at a time, and it doesn't go down the "wrong way"
or
all at once. Cut the end off the syringe if necessary so that the
fibres
don't get stuck nd cause temporary blockages and spurts when trying to
feed.

Cutting up normal salad food into bite-sized chunks can help, or putting
the salad into the liquidizer/juicer and offering this by syringe...
familiar tastes and smells, as well as nourishment.

It is so important to have fresh hay available all the time so that the
teeth have something to work on. Maybe you all know this already, but I
was so worried to hear about Adam and Snowball, I wanted to help as much
as I could. I lost my own dear little Adam pig only a couple of weeks
ago (not from teeth problems).

Wishing all piggies well, hoping Adam and Snowball are doing OK and
please
let us know their progress

Kay

Hey all--
Did anyone see this Sunday's "Petkeeping with Marc
Morrone" show? The first segment was about guinea
pigs. I was happy to see that Marc was plugging Oxbow
products (food, hay and vitamin C tablets), but I was
a little disappointed that he said two guinea pigs
could live together in a cage that was obviously too
small for them. He also gave two baby pigs as a
birthday present to a little girl who looked to be
about 6 years old--too young to properly care for the
piggies by herself. We can only hope that he gave more
extensive care instructions to the parents off-camera.
He was sitting in an enclosed pen with three kids and
had a bunch of adorable piggies all running around
them. I wish I could get my pigs to all live together
as harmoniously as his do...this guy must be some kind
of "Pig Whisperer" or something!
Overall, it was a good segment, with mostly good
information. I've certainly seen a lot worse.

be on TV

My little Flint, the loner boar, liked to pee and poo in his food dish.
No matter what I did, moved it around, took it out at times, he still
poo'd and peed in it. I finally got a bowl to hang up from the side of
his cage that I had to customize so he can get at it and eat but not go
to the bathroom in it. I sure hope he outgrows this for when he has his
neuter and he is put in with the girls. Sassy Isabelle would not put up
with the pee and poo in her food bowl.

Wheeks,
Lisa and the Guinea Girls, Flint, the lone boar and Hazelnut that I have
decided to keep.

I agree whole heartedly with Dee. I think they shoot poo hoops when
we're not around. In fact, Penelope is so good at it that we are going
to recommend to her new family that she be allowed to try out for the
Piggie Olympics.

Hi all,

Amidst the sadness of losing my Zippy, Kendall, one of my foster piggies
had four beautiful babies on Saturday morning at 4.35am. One of those
little babies looks just like my Zippy and I cannot help but be drawn to
him over and over.

Every time I see newborn piggies I am astounded by how cute and perfect
they are. Now I know what my Zippy must have looked like as a teeny baby
since I never got to see that part (I adopted him when he was over a
year old).

I know this little baby is not my Zippy, but it soothes my soul a bit
for which I thank this guy over and over. He just gives me this look
like "hey lady, this is too deep for me I am just a day old!" So then I
laugh and that also heals the hurt.

The other thing that amazes me is how fast they grow! Kenzie's babies
are two weeks old and they look enormous in comparison to these new
ones!

Thank you everyone for your kind words about the loss of my Zippy, I
know you all understand how much it hurts.

Be well everyone,
Lisa and the newly expanded gang at Wheeks and Squeaks

Stacy,

I also seen this episode and was very disappointed for in the fact that
he gave this little girl 2 guinea pigs. I hope he did give the mother
and young girl lots of off--camera information.

I agree most of his guinea pig segment was good, but I think he could
have mentioned more about cage sizes and the importance of guinea pigs
not being "good first pets" for children and it IS the parent's
responsibility to make sure they have fresh food and water and all their
needs looked after.

I think the fact that he was sitting in this enclosed circle with a
bunch of guinea pigs and children would be misleading for most viewers.
He just made it seem guinea pigs were fun for children, like a toy.
Maybe I was just being too much of a critic yesterday and I was having a
bad day PMSing and all.

My guinea pig jumped out of my lap while I was sitting in a chair
holding
him and landed on the floor--he looked ok, and after I held him for a
while
(and freaked out) I put him back in his cage--he didn't show any obvious

signs of injury--will he be ok? He's never had a fall before and I just
want to know what to look for if he's hurt himself. He didn't wheek or
anything--just looked a little shocked.
Thanks,
Vicky

My sweet gentlepig Joey G. passed on to the Bridge Thursday afternoon.
He
was four years old, much too young for such a journey. He passed away
at
the vet's office, just as I was waiting to pick him up. I can't begin
to
say how terrible it was to think I would see him looking up at me from
his
carrier and then learn that he was gone! It was his third vet visit in
four days.

I met Joey at our Humane Society in October 2001. He had been found
abandoned, with sarcoptic mange and no hair. He underwent many, many
treatments for the mange before the Humane Society put him up for
adoption. When I saw him I could tell he would be hard to place; he was

impossible to pick up. There was no type of bond between us, and I
could
tell that as far as he was concerned, I didn't exist. Of course I went
home and told my husband that there was a piggie who needed us.

After his adoption, Joey hated to be touched. There were days that I
wondered if he would ever come around. My vet pronounced him
wild. Slowly, though, he began to accept our presence, and our totally
unsocialized piggie became a lap pig. He enjoyed being brushed,
massaged,
and generally "fussed over." He even liked lying on his back in my arms

and having his tummy rubbed. Somewhere along the way his acceptance had

become love.

Joey's fur was odd-looking at first, and we had no idea what type of
guinea
pig he was. His fur was too long for him to be a Teddy and not quite
the
right texture for an Aby. The "G." in his name stood for Gryphon, after

the mythical beast, because we weren't sure quite what he was. His hair

grew and grew, until finally we realized he was a Texel.

Joey shared his room, though not his cage, with Buttercup, and when she
passed away in 2003, he mourned. His new friend was Remie, another
male,
and they quickly bonded; sadly Remie passed away last year. Then
Sunshine
and Tumbleweed, two of the Maryland rescue piggies, came into his
life. When they met on the kitchen floor after a few weeks, I was
nervous. I'd never tried to bond three piggies, let alone three
males. There was very little smelling and no arguing at all. Joey the
gentlepig immediately accepted his new friends into his world, and they
accepted him.

We had no indication that Joey was ill until he refused his carrot
Monday
morning. I took him to the vet that afternoon (after attending a
funeral
-- a terrible week) and discovered that although I'd been checking and
cleaning him every day for impaction, he had some impaction that I
hadn't
seen was there. My vet cleaned him out, showed me how to be more
aggressive in my cleaning, and sent us home. Joey seemed to feel
better,
but his appetite didn't totally improve, and we were back at the vet's
the
next day. Of course, Joey decided to perk up as he was being examined.
He
ate some of the hay I'd brought and looked much more lively and alert.
We
went home again and decided to feed him Critical Care and Pedialyte to
strengthen him. Thursday he wouldn't eat his breakfast at all, and we
went
to the vet's for an X-ray. Later that day he left us. We don't know
why.

Joey, I miss your unfailingly sweet nature, the way you would let me
wiggle
your feet, the kindness you showed to all new piggies in the house --
and a
thousand other things. Thank you for coming into our lives. Rest well,
my
sweet boy. We love you.

Oh, so very sadly,
Cindy, Sunshine, and Tumbleweed

Snowball, glad to hear that you're feeling better after the accident.
Thanks, too, for warning us about falling and heavy things being hung
over our cages.

We have our our own warning -- you have to be careful of klutzy Daddy
Slaves who may trip and fall and crush your cage when you're in it (true
story)! We are OK and were very scared, but our cage was never quite
the same after that.

Patches and Percy
