[Gpdd] Health: Snowball's Teeth

Carla Martinez cmartinez36 at houston.rr.com

Hi Piggie friends! It has been awhile since we made our presence known
and it has been nagging at me to write. I just have to keep in touch.
For the last week or so I have been preoccupied with Snowball's eating
ability. He had to visit the vet last week because I could see that his
incisors or front teeth didn't look even and he was gradually eating
less and less. My poor baby!

So his vet Dr. Frank and tech Michael trimmed his other teeth to match
the length of the upper and lower side which had somehow been broken.
She thought he might have a hereditary thing, but I still wonder if the
cause was him rearranging his dishes. I swear one day it looked like
they flung the whole saucer across their pen.

Since his vet visit I've weighed him every day. It actually took from
Saturday til Thursday before he was eating completely normally again. He
is still not eating enough hay to satisfy me but he's pretty much back
to his old chompin self for the time being. Will keep watching. He's
almost 3 and a very sweet piggie.

Guinea pigs rule!
Carla, Snickers and Snowball

In regards to some of the questions about the oxbow foods. In my
opinion as
my husbands store has sold it now for over 6 months I believe it to be
one
of the best foods out there. Willie loves the food, hay and pretty much
all
the treats. This is actually the brand of food that we recommend over
the
L/M ones that we care in our bulk bins if people ask. When I'm at the
store
I am actually the one that peopel go to with their small animal
questions
and I will gladly recommend oxbow as it is wonderful stuff. I can say
that
we sell a lot of their different varieties of hay as well as their food
for
both gps and especially for the rabbits... So as for people wondering if

performance is for young cavies well, according to the information that
they
taught me when I actually talked with the reps from oxbow at a show
performance is for the younger gps because it has the alfalafa and such
while the cuisine is for the more mature or older gps because the
pellets
are more timothy based and you don't want your older gps to have to much

alfalfa. I won't say I am a gp expert but I love to share what I do know

with anyone.

Thanks and have a weeekkks of weekend,
Slave Alicia and Willie

I love my girls, but they do have their moments. They
are all housed together and one female in
particular--Teddy--gets very aggressive when she is in
heat. She tries to mount all the other girls and she
chases them around quite a bit. She especially picks
on Tigger, as Tigger is the "new girl" and also at the
very bottom of the pecking order. Tigger is very
passive and Teddy and the other girls tend to take
advantage of that. The girls fuss at each other quite
a bit as well, but they don't fight or hurt one
another.

So yes, I think girls are a little mored difficult,
and slightly less "friendly" than the boys. However,
because my pigs are all in the same room, the boys
tend to act up and be a bit more stinky because they
can smell the girls (I live in an apartment, so I
don't have enough space to put the boys and girls in
separate rooms).

My first pig, Cosmo, was a solo male and he was very,
VERY sweet and not stinky at all. Personally, I don't
mind the "stinkyness", and I don't think it is nearly
as bad as ferrets, or even dogs. I love ALL my pigs ,
and I don't intentionally chose one gender over the
other. I do have a friend who prefers only males,
though.

Alison,
Yes, I've used Oxbow's Cavy Performance for my young
piggies and I think it is wonderful. I also use it for
my elderly pigs if they start to lose weight. I think
it is a good choice, and if it is easy for you to get
I'd say stick with it!

This is in response to the Oxbow pellets. When my piggie Amos was a
youngster I fed him the Oxbow Cavy performance pellets. Now that he's
older, I feed him the Oxbow Cavy cuisine. It has no preservatives, and
the pellets are made from timothy hay, rather than alfalfa hay. Everyone
I have talked to says they are the best pellets for our piggies, and I
agree. Hope this helps, Pam, slave to Amos

Hi guys,
-Sherry, I would love to do a pignic. I live in Charleston SC. Plus I
know of
a few other GP owners who would love to do it too! This is so exciting!
If you
need any help planning, let me know!
-Lucky's mom, twas I who wrote about the psyc training. Yes, piggies are
sooo
much smarter than we give them credit for! Their cognitive capacity has
yet to
be effectively measured (which is what I'm doing now). My idea for
tracking
their development is to present them with the typical human infant
developmental tragectories, such as: concrete objectivity, a sense of
self,
theory of mind, memory of visual and auditory cues, and strategic
operational
thought. Human babies go through several developmental stages and the
level at
which they demonstrate these concepts is a tool to measure their
cognitive
development. THis is done primarily because babies are non-verbal. THis
is why
I decided to use these levels to test the GP's (since they can't really
tell
us if they know something or not). There are different ways to test
these, and
they're not very complicated.
1. A-not-B errors- this tests object permanence. Basically, you want to
see
if the piggy can tell when you hide something, that it's not allways in
the
same place.
    - hold a carrot(or treat of some kind) in front of the pig( in your
lap in
a place where it can't run very far, bathroom perhapse) Let him take a
bite,
take it and make sure he pays attention while you close your fist over
it so
that it can't be seen. Do this until he understands that it is in fact
in your
hand, and reward him if he comes to look in your hand with a nibble. Do
this
several times. The next day do the same thing with the same hand. The
next
day, Start with the same hand, then, the next time you do it, hide it
behind
your back ( so that he can't see it) then bring the fist back and let
him
realize that it is not there. Next time, show it to him, hide it behind
your
back and leave your fist loose on your lap. If he keeps going back to
the
hand, he is making an A-not-B error. (this actually is a sign of higher
processing!) mark his progress, when he stops going to the hand, over
the
course of a few days,he has moved past the A-not-B error stage, This is
Huge!!!
Okay, I'll give you another cognitive task next time (my hands are
tired!) If
anyone wants to post their results, tracked over days, that would be
awesome.
If ya'll don't mind, I could use it as data for my research!
Not only is this interesting for you, my piggies have fun with it! It
gives us
a good regular playtime game.
Have fun! Weeeee!
Laura Grace(LG) Luther and Pippin

Carla-
I knew this was going to become a hot topic. We can help the situation
by a little education, and spreading the truth. We know our little guys
aren't dangerous - it just takes some common sense.
Here's what a good friend who has worked with numerous varieties
of animals professionally for many years says:
"Here's the deal - try to educate the panicked.
First, suggest a fecal check by a vet for ANY animal kept around
children.
Second, use proper cleaning methods, including at least weekly bleach
water cleaning of cages, bowls, and water bottles.
Third, discourage empirical antibiotic treatment of both pets and
humans.
If anyone asks about this problem, please try to make them understand
that
any given animal (humans included) harbor salmonella, girardia,
coccidia,
and other organisims in their bodies. It is only when environmental
conditions allow the microorganisms to get out of control that the
damage
occurs. This includes stress and poor keeping of animals, as well as
general filth.
What gets me is the fact that nobody keeps track of the number of kids
who
get sick off the lunch bars at schools. 30 people in 10 states get sick
and
it becomes a witch hunt on pets. No one ever tries to outlaw wilted
lettuce
and lukewarm taco meat."
Yes, we are safe, but I fear a lot of little fuzzy pets won't be after
this panic
hits. It's just common sense, like at the petting zoos. The animals are
in
a crowded environment, they don't use t.p. or get to take showers, then
people take their little kids in who have to touch everything and put
their
hands in their mouths.
One thing I will mention, that I read somewhere not long ago . . . these
little guys don't have tooth decay like people because they don't have
the
bacteria in their mouths like humans. However, if we kiss them on the
mouths and feed them stuff we've been biting off of, we can transfer
that
bacteria to them, causing them unnecessary problems. So now I worry
more about giving them germs than getting them! I just rub noses or
maybe kiss a ear (they're probably happier not to have the mouth of
someone much bigger than them looming in their face, anyway! ;-) )

We all owe it to these little guys to educate 'the others'! This is an
ongoing
campaign, just like monitoring pet store pets and re-homing those
unfortunate
animals who end up in crowded barns or flying out windows, etc.
And we are up to it!
Susi and the Okie Piggies

I just started using shredded paper for the pigs. They really seem to
love it! Also, a little goes a LONG way. I am using a regular strip
shredder. I thought about using a cross cutting one, but I think that
might make the little papers harder to clean up / easier to get tossed
out of the cage. The strips are easy to pick up off the floor and are
staying inside the cages quite nicely. We have two hand-me-down
shredders (free!!) and are happy to now have such a great job for them.

WEll, today I was playing with Otis and noticed some white wiggly things
on his back. I am guessing Lice. I emailed a few people who told me to
get some neem oil which i did from the health food store. I mixed it
with a little veggie oil and massaged it onto both of my piggies. I
figured if one had it, the other probably would. While massaging Otis, i
could see all the little buggers crawl to the top of his skin! it was
soooo gross. I didn't really see any surface on Lemi. At any rate,
everytihng in the cage was cleaned and cardboard box houses were thrown
out. IN 2 days, i will shampoo them and check it out. I know others have
had similar experiences with this. When we had iguanas and they had
mites, the vet told us to baste them up with veggie oil and the mites
would basically just drowned. I guess this is the same idea. Hopefully,
this solution will work. Anyone who has had similar experiences, let me
know. I know there is a lot on the digest but I just can't search for it
now. I
have been cleaning all day long and just need to focus my attentions
elsewhere.
Meliss and Lemi and wriggly-bug Otis!

Hi to everyone,

My second youngest guinea girl Julia has been chirping alot. This
especially
happens in the middle of the night and early morning when I get up for
work.
I have no idea of why she has this need for the distress call. I have
nothing around her surroundings that could be causing her distress.
What could be
causing this. I have 5 other guinea girls that are fine. It is just
Julia.
Any insight to this little problem.

Thank you, Janet

Hey everyone! I havent written in a long time but for those of you whe
remember I have a lone pig. I used to have 2 but chippy went over the
bridge about a year ago, anyways I have been reading the postings about
the paper shredding and I don't have a shredder and I'm probably not
gonna get one just because I really can't afford it right now. I just
use aspen and a generic brand of carefresh blend for bedding.
Besides my pig-a-poo eats everything too. He LOVES fresh grass!!
I just gave his rearend a bath. I try and give just his bottom half a
bath about every 2 or 3 wheeeeks because he pees right where he sleeps
and lays in it so half of his butt used to be white but its stained
yellow now. I can' get it out. He's doin really good as far as health
wise though. He just stinks!!
Also I got him 2 things called CHUBES. They are like big round cardboard
tubed that he crawls through, anyways they came with some cotton fluff
stuff for piggys to bed down in but like I said he eats everything so I
wonder if that stuff is ok for him to eat????
Also I got him some new kind of food to kinda mix in with his other
pellets and stuff. Its called Gerty guinea Pig. I think its made by the
same people who make the carefresh bedding stuff. Anyways He LOVES it,
It has a big blend of pellets, flaked corn, oats,Hay,flaked peas and all
kinds of stuff and I just blend a little in with his regular food and he
loves it. It just helps with a little bit of variety. He still get lots
of lettuce and other fruits and veggies. He's a spoiled pig thats for
sure!! well thats about all for now.

sorry it was so long
