Hi All,

A note of caution regarding trying the Heimlich Maneuver on a guinea pig:

Keep in mind that a guinea pig is a VERY fragile animal; and that guinea pigs are not rabbits (who have their own fragilities). The Heimlich Maneuver aside, many piggies are killed annually just by being squeezed too hard by children that are not aware that they are applying too much force (a major reason why a guinea pig is not suitable as a companion for a young child).  

The article says "Expect massive internal bruising,  but not broken ribs."  - this may be a bit of an understatement. Spinal trauma or fracture, as well as ruptured internal organs are at high risk.

You should only consider the technique described if there is *no* other method to save the piggie. Even then, there is a high potential that the lifesaving measure will be fatal.
