No one can possibly think I'm not a TOTAL slave after reading this. Everyone has been so helpful in answering my questions regarding feeding Bud grass all summer. I got worried about the health concerns because when you live in the country who knows what is out using your lawn when you're asleep or not around. I fed Bud grass all last summer (no hay but pellets and treats) with no ill effects but maybe I just got lucky.
After giving the matter a lot of consideration I decided to continue to give Bud all the grass he wants but I am washing his grass. Now this is not as easy as it sounds. Grass does not wash nearly as easily as veggies as you can all imagine if you think about it. I tried washing and drying it in a colander, blotting it with towels and letting it air dry after the blotting. All of this was messy, a lot of work and time-consuming and the grass was still a little too wet in my opinion.
I decided to give a salad spinner a try. I've never used one before (again I'm the last person in the world to try anything new) so I bought one at Target yesterday. This is the answer and it works great!!!. I take the inner colander-type bowl outside to cut grass into, soak it in the outer bowl in veggie wash water for a couple minutes, rinse very thoroughly and then give it a good spin. Voila, nice fresh, clean grass for Bud. I dump it onto a paper towel to get any last stray drops and serve it to Bud. He loves it and I feel much better about what I'm giving him. Slave labor, for sure!

On a related topic, when I'm feeding Bud grass like this his water consumption is almost nil. But it is a GOOD THING that I'm using shredded paper for bedding because I am using LOTS more bedding! I read in the new magazine that a guinea pig's bladder is the size of a grape. That may be but Bud is emptying out that 'grape' A LOT more frequently now!!
