Two types of Piggie Treatment, that is!
On the topic of trimming toenails - sometimes one of mine will squeal
and pull the foot back suddenly as if I've hurt them. No blood, but it
still might hurt. So I just trim off a bit, not clear back to where it
might look like it should be. I figure a little is safe, I can always go
back and nip off a bit more. I rub the foot, rub their back, let them
relax and enjoy the session a bit, and of course, not take too long.
Even two feet at a time can be a good way to ease stress.
Then, there's Piggie Treatment, piggie-style!
In the past, I've copied a piggie mom's form of discipline when somepig
decides to nip (at me or another pig). You have to already have your
hand near the pig, suddenly reaching for him just adds to the upset.
Just take a firm hold of the hair on the back of the neck, between your
thumb and forefinger, and give a quick, gentle tug, saying 'no'. Don't
jerk hard, don't shout. The suddenness gets their attention, and will
at least serve to distract them momentarily from their attack mode.
Sometimes it's just a spoiled pig - Snowy will still nip at whoever
or whatever threatens to come between her and my hand if I'm
rubbing her back! CP will to a lesser extent, so if I'm petting one,
I have to pet them both - at the same time!
:-)
