[Gpdd] Health: Clancy may be blind?

Hi everyone!

At the beginning of December, 4 adorable babies were dumped at the "pound" and they in turn called me so we have the brothers Clancy and Colby and the sisters Darla and Roxy. When they came to me I was guessing them to be only about 6 weeks old, so that makes them about 3 and a half months old or so now.

Babies are always kind of touch and go for a while in terms of handling but the girls calmed right down and are as sweet as pie. Colby is still a little bugger to catch and is a nibbler but he is getting better the more lap time we spend together.

Clancy on the other hand has had me puzzled. He is a red/tan/white crested boy with red eyes. Colby is a red/white crested with black eyes. Clancy acts like Rocket did, the abused pig that had come to me. The terror in his little face when I go to pick him up breaks my heart.

None of the babies had ever been handled so I tried to attribute it to that, but I had him out yesterday while I was cleaning his cage and I had a thought that he didn't really see me. So I had him in the carrier without Colby and was kind of wiggling my fingers in what would be his field of vision and, nothing. No reaction. I did the same thing to Colby and he was like, what the heck are you doing lady, and chomp. Darn nibbler. :)

So I had Clancy out for lap time and I was observing him. My cat jumped up on the arm of the couch. Clancy put his nose up in the air and then turned it in the direction of the cat. The other babies are still not used to my cats yet and would have freaked a bit more, I am thinking.

These are obviously all very unscientific tests obvosuly and he can do things to make me think he can see and maybe he can see partially. Red eyes don't generally mean blindness in a colored pig. I have others and they are fine. Has anyone had a blind pig before? Should he always stay with Colby? Should I not adopt them out?

I obviously only want what is best for him. Poor little bugger. I was just thinking he was a naughty sassafras originally.

Any advice would be appreciated. It is always interesting here at the rescue.

On a sadder note, one of my adopters wrote to me to tell me of Guinness' passing. A long time ago, I wrote about him on here because he was chronically wheezy. She was the very best home, had him on fleece, knew all about his problems. His new buddy Pig took good care of him. But he was so prone to URIs and he came down with pneumonia and passed during the night. He was so happy there and she had the best of vets and my heart goes out to her. Guin was such a great pig...

  Sorry for the epic post!
