Last night I had to put Rusti Mae down. She was diagnosed with leukemia on December 21st. Her lymph nodes were quite large. The vet and I did everything we could and at the time the vet told me that most piggies only have a month to live after being diagnosed. Rusti Mae looked in perfect health and was not suffering until yesterday. I came home to find her struggling to walk and shaking. I scooped her up and rushed her to the vet.

It's very hard because I miss her terribly but I know that I made the right decision. I didn't want my baby to suffer and I told myself that once she began to suffer I would have to put her down.

I need to say that Dr. Heidi Hoefer of West Hills Animal Hospital in Huntington NY is the BEST cavy vet. I've brought all 4 of my piggies to see her and she's been able to treat them correctly each time! If she doesn't know something, she does research and comes back to me with an answer within a reasonable amount of time. Her staff and her are very compassionate and patient. If anyone lives in the NY (Long Island) area and is in need of a vet I suggest Dr. Hoefer.
