[Gpdd] Health: Metacam Use

I had an interesting conversation with my vet this morning necessitated
by my Franzie's having broken an incisor for the second time. It seems
he has a recurring or chronic infection which weakens the tooth making
it susceptible to breakage. (Plus he's an incessant cage biter!)
The vet prescribed an antibiotic for the infection and Metacam for pain
relief. He said that he was going to up the usual dosage of the Metacam
based on information he heard at a recent vet's round-table meeting at
the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School. He said that he always
felt that a higher dose would be tolerated, but never prescribed one
until he heard that research had shown that it would be safe. He
prescribed a dose of 0.20 cc per day (for 5 days to be reduced to 0.10
cc per day thereafter), which is double the old recommended dose. He
felt confident that getting this information from a teaching school with
research experts it would be reliable. Hopefully, the information is
correct as I wouldn't want Franz to be used as a... um....guinea pig.
Anyway, I wanted to put this information out there and see if anyone
could confirm it's being factual. It seems that if it is indeed true,
Corrine's vet was not only insensitive but quite possibly *wrong*!
