EYES
Poke injuries and foreign bodies in the eye are the most common problems.
With poke injuries, usually caused by the guinea pig rooting about in the
hay, the eye will be closed and when it is examined there will usually be a
sign of scratching on the surface of the eye. The use of BROLENE eye drops
or ointment, twice daily, is recommended. These are very effective in
preventing the eye from becoming infected.
The symptoms for foreign bodies in the eye are identical and when examined,
the husk is usually in the corner of the eye and is easily extracted with a
pair of tweezers. Be warned that if there is real resistance to the husk
being removed, it should be left to a vet to remove as forceful tugging
could damage the eye.
The symptoms of the eye being infected are the eyeball being blood shot
around the edges and when the skin around the eye is palpated the animal
will wince with pain. In these cases, a prescription only medicine must be
used so a visit to the vets will be necessary.
I have also read of Peter Gurney saying Optrex is good for sore eyes in
pigs. He says there's 2 common problems for eyes: a foreign body or a
blocked tear duct. He says to use just a couple of drops of Optrex and to
very gently massage at a point just forward of the eye and below it. This
may make your pig sneeze!
The book Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs says that fatty eye is a
protrusion of the lower conjectival sac. Most common in self-whites, blacks
and creams and also rexes. It's thought to be an inherited conditiion.
>From what you've said I am wondering if this is what Cheekie has.
There are lots of natural and homeopathic pet health care books at the
library these days and one of them may contain suggested treatments for eye
probs in piggies. Be careful of herbal tinctures, as these will be made
using an alcoholic base, and this would probably distrupt a pigs gut flora.
Also, please double-check the herbs suggested are safe for pigs, as some can
be highly toxic to them.
Kind regards
Carole

Subject: [Gpdd] HEALTH - Eyes
Our sweet Cheekie has an eye irritation that just won't go away. I have
tried boric acid wash, human eye drops (Visine), and then obtained some
antibiotic ointment from the veterinarian. We thought that would certainly
do the
trick. It has not. I think that Cheekie might have gotten some hay seed
in
his eye at one time, which irritated the area under the bottom lid. Even
though there is nothing in the eye any more, it just won't go away. The
bottom
lid kind of droops down and the white part of the eye is a little puffy or
swollen under there. Sometimes it looks a tiny bit pinkish as well, but not
always. I thought it could be "fatty eye", but Cheekie is young and very
small.
He is not the least bit fat. Perhaps he does not have to be chubby to have
"fatty eye", but it is only in the one eye and looks like an irritation of
some
sort to me. I saw a posting on the digest not too long ago that mentioned
an herbal or holistic eye drop of some kind that cleared up their piggie's
eye
problem when nothing else seemed to work. I meant to save it at the time,
but I forgot to do so. Would the person that posted this remedy please
send
me the name of the drops or repost it in the digest. Any other suggestions
would be appreciated as well. I wish to get Cheekie's eye problem cleared
up
soon. It has been going on way too long, and nothing seems to work. We
have
run out of ideas of what else to try. Thanks very much from all of us!
