Rachel,
There really are some rotten vets out there. What with the bleach story and
now your's.
Of course your piggies should be eating veggies. What did the vet suggest
you should be doing? I get so mad when I read about vet's incompetence. When
you consider how much they charge for this useless ( and often dangerous
information ).............
Give your piggies all the hay that they can eat. The Piggyfriends all get
celery, cucumber, carrots, romaine, cauli leaves, occasional cabbage leaves
plus all sorts of goodies from the garden - dandelions, clover and other
assorted weeds, which I won't name in case you don't recognise them and
fresh grass every day. Occasional parsley, apples and tomato - the latter
two are both acidic so are a treat rather than any every day item. I have
never had any trouble with them ( in 30 + years of piggy care ) but some
people consider them a no-no. Some piggies are prone to mouth sores so cut
apples up small.
For their dry food I use a dry goat mix as this is recommended by the CCT
and Cavies Castle as some of the prepared mixes are too calorific.
The rescue lady knows more about piggies than your vet ever will. Listen to
her advice and find another vet asap!! There are some good ones out there. I
found one eventually but am lucky enough to live within driving distance of
Cavies Castle.
As for the amount you give them I think of it this way. If it has all gone,
they would like some more. They'll soon shout at you if you haven't given
enough. You can't overfeed a guinea. They know more about their food
requirements than your useless vet.
Good luck with your piggies.
Penny and the Piggyfriends.
