I'm sorry to have to let you all know that after a brilliant fight, little Mouse crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning.
Mouse was never a well pig. She came to me, along with her cage mate Skunky, through an acquaintance from someone who "couldn't care for them any more." Both pigs were in poor condition, with mites, lice, and Vit C deficiency. The person never even bothered to write a note for me about them or even to make sure I knew their names. Skunky was black and white with a funny nose, so we named her Skunk. Mousey had huge eyes and was always hiding, so she became Mouse.
Within three weeks, I found Skunky dead in the cage. I was pretty shocked because Mouse seemed to be the much sicker of the two...she was missing most of her hair and spent her days with her head in the corner. But she had a stronger will to live, I guess.
Over the last few months, Mouse grew stronger and fitter. I've told you all about her operation to have her infected eye removed. Well, her last week was one of her best ever! She was running in her cage, standing up squealing for treats, and even had hair growing in!
But this morning when I uncovered her cage, she was lying on her side, barely breathing. I picked her up and put her in her favorite cuddle cup and held her long enough to say goodbye. I'd like to think she waited to see me before she left...it makes me feel a little better, at least. Then I put her in the cage in her cup, and covered her with the soft igloo I bought her so she could have some solitude for her last moments. She liked to be alone. She died within a few minutes. My husband buried her in her cup and igloo in the garden. She loved lying in that cup under the igloo, so I'm glad she'll have them with her.
I guess she just had enough. Hindsight is 20/20, and maybe I should have just had her put to sleep rather than had the operation. Or maybe she had something really wrong internally that caught up with her. At least I know she's happy now, with Skunky and my Corky, and I'll bet Peter Gurney is spoiling her rotten as we speak!
Thanks to all on the GPDD for your support and prayers. The Mouse and I really appreciated it.
