Hi Carole-
I know it seems so desperate right now - I've been there. But
assuming there isn't some other underlying condition, Spikey
should be himself soon. Our silly Bullett has broken off his
front teeth 3 times now - I was beginning to get very concerned,
worrying that perhaps there was something wrong for them to
continue to break like that. But it hasn't happened for 3-4 months
now, and he seems fine. Anyway, I don't know how long before I
caught it, hopefully within a day. But I noticed that he would
try to eat, then walk away. So when I discovered the problem,
I would make sure to pick him up and place bites into his mouth,
which he was so grateful for. He would chew it up like he was
starving - and he probably was. Sometimes the bite would fall
out, and I would have to replace it, sometimes several times.
And I would give him extra, not just the pellets, but always in
small bits that he could handle. I discovered that if he had hay
handy that he could get started into his mouth, he could keep
it going, like a kid with spaghetti. I tried to give him extra foods
that were high in calcium, like parsley, to help build those teeth.
It really only took under 2 weeks before the teeth were grown in
sufficiently that he could once again grasp most of his food, and
he really got the hang of it sooner, especially after the first
experience. He got to where he would just shove his mouth into
the food til some went in his mouth, then proceed to chew it up.
So just keep shoving it in, as often as you can. And I would offer
him water with a medicine dropper or syringe, too, as well as on
veggies (small bits, of course).
We will keep our paws crossed and prayers sent for your dear
Spikey to make a fast and complete recovery.
