I am looking for advice on Urinary Tract Infections. My 8 month old guinea pig Sassy has been on antibiotics for almost 25 days and I am not sure that she is getting better. We took her to the emergency room in the beginning because one Sunday she was squeaking like she was in pain every time she tried to urinate. The vet tested her urine and said that it had a lot of bacteria. They started her out on Meloxicam for the pain and trimethoprim sulfa as an antibiotic. After about 5 days on these medications she wasn't drinking enough so I took her to another vet. The vet did an ultrasound to check for stones and she wasn't able to find any stones. She told me to stop the Meloxicam because it was probably upseting her stomach and that was probably why she wasn't drinking. She gave her SubQ fluids and she prescribed her Baytril for 10 days. On the 10 day on Baytril I noticed blood in her urine. She prescribed her another 10 days of Baytril. We are now on day 7 of the 2nd round of Baytril and I haven't noticed spots of blood but her urine looks darker than it should be.
The Emergency Room vet also said that after she is clear of the UTI that I should have her tested for diabetes. She said Sassy had high levels of sugar in her urine that may or may not be caused by the UTI.
They also told me to change her diet. I had been giving her pellets made mostly of alfalfa. I am slowly switching her over to Oxbow pellets. Other than pellets and timothy hay she mostly eats carrots, cucumber and oranges. I have heard that carrots are not a good thing for her to be eating and I am trying to wheen her off of them also, but they are her favorite.
At this point I don't know if I should have another ultrasound, or another urine culture, or possibly find another vet?
