Joanne,

Your piggies can get ringworm and so can you!

Wear disposable gloves when handling the kitties, who should only be handled as necessary for treatment. This defeats the object of fostering but you do not want to catch this yourself or pass it on to the piggies.

You will need to be very vigilant in disinfecting the kitties' quarters and keep them isolated from your piggies. Wash your hands before caring for your piggies. Watch for any bald patches or thick scurfing and any small lesions caused by the piggies scratching themselves. The incubation period is around 7 - 14 days.

Peter Gurney recommended a fungicidal dip called Ivamerole to begin with but if the ringworm gets worse the piggies need a course of Griseofulvin ( NOT to be used on pregnant sows.).The medications available in the US are, no doubt, completely different.

Best advice would be to check with your vet when he is treating the kitties. He will be able to test your piggies, should this become necessary.

There are pigtures on GuineaLynx together with suggestions for treatment should your piggies develop ringworm.

Keeping paws and whiskers crossed that your little piggies will be safe from this nasty condition.
