All,

Scooter, of the Squee Squad, is three years old today! I only know his birthdate because the animal shelter where I was volunteering at the time told me how old he was...he was born three days before I lost my dear Gizmo to leukemia (August 22, 2004). I hadn't wanted to get another pig, but I was at the shelter in September cleaning piggy cages from that animal neglect case in Maryland and they brought me back to where Scooter (unnamed at the time) and his mama were in the adoption rooms. They told me that someone had already adopted his mama, but they didn't want him and were just waiting until he was weaned. He was three weeks old at the time and they asked me if I would take him. I am a sucker for baby guinea pigs so I said "sure!".

He wheeked for his mama all the way home (about 1 hr and 40 minute drive) and then wheeked for his mama for two days and nights! I felt so bad for the little guy that I made him a wubbie out of a pair of my husband's tube socks. Needless to say, he got a lot of cuddles and attention because he was so little and lonely, and he has me wrapped around his little paw to this day. He's still quite talkative, too and loves to be held. When I'm in the room cleaning cages, he wheeks continuously until I get to his, as if to say "Hey! Are you ever cleaning *this* cage or what?! And by the way, where's the food?!"

He got the name Scooter because one day he climbed up on the arm of the sofa and just jumped off when I tried to get him. I thought for sure he'd be hurt, but he ended up behind an end table, and he kept "scooting" back and forth while I tried to catch him. He still jumps off the couch if I leave him there--he just scoots his front end forward until he slides off (thank goodness for carpet!)...he's always trying to get to the girls' cage, as I keep my two sows in the living room; the boys have a room of their own. Everyone at the vet's office goes on about how sweet he is and how he doesn't mind being handled...I wish some of my others were like that!

  Happy Birthday Scooter!
